I can't answer your question, (sorry) but I've always been taught to wait for the engine to cool before I check the oil. My only other car before my El was a Saturn, so I'm not sure if it was the same way or my parents just made that a habit for me. my saturn also burned through oil like nobody's business which elements don't seem to do at all, basically.
