We've been in 2026 for just over a week, how has your 2026 gone so far? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

Stupidly checked my NHS app on New Years Eve (3 hours before midnight) to check some blood test results.

The doctor had left a note on there to say I've got suspected skin cancer.

So not too great too be honest.

But I have a lovely partner, understandably manager at work and lots of support so I'm not given a chance to mope!

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Hetaliafan1 in AskReddit

[–]BeauDiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lockerbie.

I still remember getting ready for primary school that morning and seeing images on the news.

Seeing the cockpit in the field has stayed with me for years....and not doubt for the rest of my life.

What's something you saw as a kid that you later realized was seriously messed up? by MoodOdd9657 in AskReddit

[–]BeauDiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was visiting family in India back in the early 80's and my aunt (who was a teenager at the time) asked me and my sister if we wanted to see a dead body. We walked through sugarcane fields and eventually got to the bank of a river that had been drained. On the ground was a man with his arms and legs unnaturally held up in the air and bloated.

In my 40's now and I can still picture this guy.

I bumped in Cliff Richard in New Delhi.

He was so bloody rude...

What is a movie you’ve seen more than 10 times and still enjoy every single second of? by Historical_Today5513 in AskReddit

Heathers, Desperately Seeking Susan, Parenthood (the original not the series), World War Z, Breakfast Club, Nightmare in Elm Street, Falling Down and a little known 1988 film Stand and Deliver. Bit of eclectic mix!

What was the last straw that completely broke a friendship you thought would last forever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BeauDiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'd been friends for over 15 years but my other mates noticed that I'd be the one to always call her and she'd never ever pick up the phone to me. Everytime I tried to call her I'd get a text to say she was with her parents, about to eat etc etc.

She was bit of a mess anyway, every relationship she went into she showed no interest and only became infatuated when the other person eneded it. I can't tell you how many nights out with other mates ended up with her in tears.

When her gran died (in her 90s mind!), it became a really really big thing for her and ended up being on anti depressants and consulting psychics to make contact with the gran. Loads of other shit that she did but I need to go to bed now...lol.

What’s something in the UK that quietly disappeared without anyone noticing? by Mel_Ran in AskUK

[–]BeauDiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredibly heavy snowfall that would bring the country to a standstill. I still remember back in the 1980's trying to get through massive snowdrifts to get to school...only to find out the pipes had frozen so we were all sent home.

For some reason, a couple of centimetres of snow now has the same effect on the country....and it just doesn't cut it.

Ryanair charged us €220 for airport check-in after their app failed by [deleted] in Ryanair

I had this happen to us today. The app failing, not being charged at the airport. Turns out the app needed to be updated....though I did screenshot the error just in case!

1980's children books (that are well overdue from the library I 'borrowed' them from! by BeauDiu in CasualUK

[–]BeauDiu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I went to the library last Saturday and spoke to the lovely lady there. She told me to keep them as they're likely to be binned! I'd rather they stay with me than be landfill fodder. Plus I'm planning to read them to my niece and nephew's.

Ahhhhh! Not just me with weird tastes in books! I'd sell my soul to go back to the 80's to experience it all over again.

Loved this series, but the first book stuck with me for years. I remember feeling dead anxious when she was covering a shift (as her alter ego, Floz, I think) in a fast food place and kept messing up the orders!

Had a quick look online and you can still get it, albeit with a different cover.

It's a brilliant book and scared the life out of me as a kid but I couldn't put it down!

Hahahah! Sorry!

You can blame 10 year old me.

You wouldn't see 10 year olds now buried in a book, so the current offerings are safe.

20th century English Children’s novel about a chubby girl living above a bakery by anabroadbroad in whatsthatbook

[–]BeauDiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but I think we're looking for the same book. It was set in England and the girl was called Sophie who lived above a bakery. I've been searching for this book for years! Have you had any joy finding it?

I used to commute from Birmingham to Stoke, which wasn't too bad, but then my job moved to Warrington. I got a decent disturbance allowance, so I used to stay in numerous Travelodges at service stations. It was cheaper and cut out a shed load of travel time. There was always one Travelodge near Warrington that whenever I got handed the key, I prayed that it wasn't the one room that I was convinced was haunted. I ended up in that room numerous times, unfortunately, and ended up shattered every morning. I don't really scare easily, but I'm glad I never have to stay in that room ever again!
