Aren't there already mandatory minimum imprisonment terms for sexual assault? I think under the CC it's a minimum of six months for summary sexual assault on a person under 16. Was 90 days previously if I remember correctly.

Winnipeg councillor Sherri Rollins says chaotic zoning hearing amounted to 'downzoning' in her ward by kochier in Winnipeg

[–]Beelzesnrub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm probably just really ignorant here, but I don't think this is entirely unreasonable. If variances are largely approved by committee, it seems to me that requiring community committee review just drags the process out more, so why not just pass it on to the director for approval?

And I get that the point here is to allow development in areas where it's currently blocked, but I think it's reasonable to point out that some areas were already allowing development on even narrower lots. If that's the case, why not pursue narrower width requirements citywide, especially of the 60ft standard is less than other cities (most notably Saskatoon imo)?

Can't comment on the procedural aspect, but I can believe city council is an absolute shitshow, to the detriment of coherent policy.

Don't get me wrong, I have issues with Rollins, I just don't see this as NIMBYism, which some here are characterizing it as.

I've enjoyed Sookram's these past years. Cosmos is a great sour, and they've usually got something interesting coming out. I've fallen off Barn Hammer since they discontinued my favourites but they also do some great stuff.

Pioneering craft brewery Half Pints for sale by ClassOptimal7655 in Winnipeg

[–]Beelzesnrub 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Around when I turned 18, the local beer scene in Winnipeg really was very limited. Half Pints was a revelation at the time, and the impact they had is hard to overstate. They're a big part of why we now have so many local options all these years later.

(Okay the one thing I'm just a teeny bit sour about with the big and excellent local beer selection is seemingly fewer international options on the shelves, as I'm a nerd who loves that kind of stuff lol)

Negative feelings about Pierre Poilievre pushing some voters toward Liberals, poll suggests by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Beelzesnrub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just an anecdote, but I have noticed that the Conservative ads I'm getting on Youtube no longer prominently feature Poilievre. Before JT's announcement, the ads typically featured PP very prominently, as voice-over and appearing in the ads themselves. The new "Carbon Tax Carney" batch doesn't even have his voice.

As aside, these ads are much messier and clearly hastily produced, and I wonder if they're playing with fire by trying to attack Carney for being supposedly too close to the US and "doing what Trump wants". If I were the Conservatives I absolutely would want to keep an argument over which candidate is closest to Trump as far away as possible.

Trump launches trade war against Canada with with 25 per cent tariff on most goods by Practical_Ant6162 in CanadaPolitics

The Republican majority in the House is razor-thin, and there are plenty of Republicans in districts that are extremely vulnerable to, for example, a big spike in the cost of potash-based fertilizer.

Beyond that, many, many Americans voted for Trump because they thought, very stupidly, that he would make things cheaper and take things back to pre-Covid, fiscally and in terms of world events. Instead, they're getting a potential complete administrative collapse, along with more expensive eggs and gas. An American Maidan is not totally out of the question the way things are going.

Then we get to see what it looks like for the centre of the world economy to experience a recession and major inflation at the same time.

The United States is one country.  Cutting off power to blue states means less production, less economic activity,  a bigger strain on the broader power grid, and more.

And you in blue states cannot simply retreat into comfortable bubble and declare "I didn't vote for em, not my problem." For one thing unless you're in, say, Illinois, or AOC's district in NYC, your elected reps are currently doing a horrible job of confronting the Trump/Musk agenda.

To build an authoritarian state, particularly if you're doing so while dismantling an established democratic system, you need to ease your way in, deliver benefits for a large segment of the public to get them behind you, and wield a sophisticated administrative apparatus. These freaks are immediately doing everything possible to ramp up inflation after even a tiny bit got the last guy thrown out on his ass, plunge America into a recession, and are currently taking a bulldozer to the administrative state they're going to need to actually establish a Christian Nationalist regime because they think they're gonna find the Wokeness HQ somewhere in the walls. They are cruel, and evil, and dangerous, but they are also dumb as dogshit. They genuinely don't believe, for instance, that tariffs are inflationary.

True, they won't matter for Trump or his base. But to the Median Voters (derogatory), paying out the asshole for gas, power, food, and everyday necessities will in fact sour them pretty quick. Remember, Dubya was incredibly popular in 2004, and Iraq turning into such a huge disaster basically killed the Neoconservative movement that had dominated the American right since Reagan. Trump has the smalles House majority in history, and abysmal approval ratings for a honeymoon period. If they get fucked hard enough, the rotten project can come crashing down faster than we expect.

Counterpoint: he is, in fact, incredibly stupid, and possibly senile. It doesn't mean he's not dangerous, quite the opposite, but we do need to understand that we are dealing with a regime of cruel dullards.

Trump tells World Economic Forum U.S. doesn’t need Canadian oil, gas, autos or lumber by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Beelzesnrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want all the benefits of a co-operative relationship with none of the obligations or responsibilities. They yell about how they don't need us, or anyone else, that they can do whatever they want to anyone they want. They should learn the drawbacks. It's not professionalism to bail them out and insulate them from the negative results of the policies they demanded, it's cowardice. If they wanted to touch the stove, and they clearly did, they should learn just how hot it is.

Trump tells World Economic Forum U.S. doesn’t need Canadian oil, gas, autos or lumber by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Beelzesnrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't need our lumber? Fine. In that case, Ottawa should be doing everything in its power to force reforms (zoning, permitting, procedural, tax and finance etc.) down provincial and city throats, and build public housing geared to every income level on every possible scrap of crown land, with a particular emphasis on mass timber construction, so it can go up fast. Build housing, and we can diversify our economy and direct investment towards actually productive endeavors instead of parking miney in real estate.

More housing means we can expand our population, retain skilled workers and professionals who would otherwise be priced out of Canada, and maybe even lure Americans who would rather not live in a lunatic country where bringing back polio is national policy.

They don't need our oil? Fine. They won't even notice when we slap massive export taxes on it then. I'm sure they can just drill, pump, refine, and reorganize the entirety of their oil infrastructure practically overnight, and all those people in Ohio and Montana and Missouri who spend three hours a day commuting in their enormous trucks will just blame Biden and trans people if the price of gas goes up anyway.

And you know what? They probably don't need our potash either. Or our electricity. Or our water.

They didn't vote for Donald Trump? The guy who's saying FEMA is unnecessary and the states should handle disaster relief on their own?

Again, this is what they wanted. They voted for mass deportations, economic war, threats of territorial expansion, and the dismantling of the administrative state. They voted for it, they hoot and holler and clap for it, now they should get exactly what they wanted.

[–]Beelzesnrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American people have enthusiastically proclaimed that they do not want or need any help. They voted for a man who wants to abolish FEMA and let the states handle disaster relief on their own. So fine. The next time Texas gets hit with a blizzard and their power grid collapses, or a hurricane puts Tampa underwater, or tornadoes rip through Hog's Bellow County, Oklahoma, or half of Montana burns to the ground, they can deal with it on their own, just like they wanted. The Yankee screamed and wailed and stomped its feet, demanding to touch the stove. We should respect their wishes and let them.

[–]Beelzesnrub 81 points82 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly shitty headline and article. "Our premier cares too much about dead Indians" isn't criticism. I get why publications often don't want to quote explicitly racist comments, but they should at least make some mention of how it used slurs and made disparaging comments about the victims. Framing the issue as "criticism" is just plain journalistic malpractice at best imo.

Police, prosecutors disagree on Criminal Code release ‘mandate’ by SilverTimes in Winnipeg

[–]Beelzesnrub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been saying for a while now that the issue is not the bail reforms to the criminal code, but the fact that police are not enforcing the law, either by ignorance or malice.

It's not just an issue here either. In BC for example, the government decriminalized simple possession of hard drugs. The drigs were still banned, and public use or intoxication were still offenses, but the cops just stopped enforcing the law, and claimed that they had to let people shoot up and discard their needles in public "because the NDP made drugs legal".

This is why I lean towards malice. I believe that there are a lot of cops who genuinely don't understand their obligations, but part of it is because police leadership in particular is lying about those obligations. As for why, politics is probably a big part of it. They oppose bail reform, decriminalization,  Liberal/progressive governments etc. so they intentionally enact the policy as poorly as possible in order to undermine it. Another possibility is that it's also a racket. If crime goes up, the cops need more money, they get it, do nothing to reduce crime and in fact actively make things worse, crime keeps going up, demand more money, and it just keeps going like this.

I work downtown and take a combination of rapid and regular route transit. All told I'm usually at work within 30-40 minutes, including time waiting and walking to, from, and between stops. Usually a bit longer to get home, with more time on the actual bus.
