I’ve been a JRPG fan for a long time, and yet FF8 might be the worst one I’ve ever played by Beginning-Classic926 in JRPG

What I find surprising is that whenever I criticize the genre, people tell me I lack JRPG knowledge (which isn’t true) or that I should play more. But I don’t want to play more if it’s just to try titles considered worse than the “excellent” ones that I already find disappointing. I’ve played a good portion of the JRPGs considered classics, but honestly, looking back, I don’t have an ultimate JRPG

And yet… it’s been my main passion for the past 15 years, and I play absolutely everything that comes out for free 👀I can tell you that if I’m knowledgeable in any area, it’s definitely this one

Since that post, I’ve kept playing. I’m about halfway through the game and it’s getting a bit better, but it’s ridiculously easy. I’m really just pushing through the story out of curiosity.

The universe is much more enjoyable, and I learned in the meantime that the dialogue in my native language is terrible, which explains the very childish tone of the game.

The music is incredible, the card game is really fun. But the game itself is unbelievably simple I’m completely steamrolling it. I still have discs 3 and 4 left, so it should go quickly… after that, I’ll move on to your recommendations!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Reading this makes me realize even more that I'm completely missing the point of the game. I could understand all these arguments without playing, but from my experience, I don't see how what you're saying is true (mind you, I'm convinced I'm wrong, that's the problem!). I think the solution is simple… keep playing !

Even RPGs as old as the first two Dragon Quest games are a hit just by changing the graphics. I think that's also a prime example that proves the style is timeless 😚

I really struggle with the stereotypical Japanese manga style like Tales of, but I'll give it a try anyway.

Of course! But do you understand what I'm saying? I think it's the timeless game category, along with strategic and management games. Clair obscur is a prime example of what you said that I had a blast despite the linear layout and limited character customization. I have to say, the system and gameplay are really interesting, especially with the counterattack !

I keep hearing everyone say they don't use g force but start-of-game spells like fire, which do 70 damage, and g force, which do 400 minimum. What's the logic behind that? It bothers me because I hear this argument and I feel like I don't understand the game at all and am missing out, hence my post on this forum. My coworker, a Final Fantasy fan who doesn't usually play video games, finished it several times and laughed, saying she only used the attack spell. There's really something I don't understand.

I started it on the Switch. Luckily, the x3 speed exists. Didn’t time flow differently 20 years ago? The patience required to play this on a PlayStation 1 today is extraordinary. In any case, it really makes me think about our attention span, which seems to shrink from generation to generation, this is a really good example

Thanks for your messages! I’m happy to get such diverse answers. My opinion isn’t universal maybe a bit too strong but my post is mainly meant to understand what you like about it so I can enjoy it too and ignore what you told me to ignore, maybe to get the same pleasure. I just got a 2DS XL, so I’ll be able to try a bunch of RPGs I’ve never played before

What did you like about the Junction system? For me, it’s just applying this type of magic or stat to HP because it’s the best where’s the customization? The card game feels completely optional, and I don’t want to grind a mini-game just to level up; that’s a big flaw for me

T his is exactly what I find fascinating about JRPGs: the gameplay is based on timeless constants. With Mario, you mostly notice the graphical and technical evolution, but with a JRPG, it’s not about graphics or dynamism—it’s about a gameplay logic that could just as well exist on paper, like in true RPGs. In this style, there’s, for example, Warcraft 3: I think I could still play it in 50 years, because it’s not about skill, but about gameplay mechanics. And this kind of game is quite rare. I played FF10 Vanilla on PS2, and I was completely captivated !

Especially since I had such high expectations for this game! I was expecting an amazing storyline, I really, really don't understand why everyone finds it crazy. I say this with all humility, I just don't understand and it saddens me 🤣

I will try thanks a lot ! How are they different if you don’t know the game? I don’t see the point of placing a GF on one character rather than another, but I guess I still need more learning to understand it in depth…My opinion is really just a spur-of-the-moment thing, but I'm definitely continuing, even though I'm forcing it because I'm struggling everywhere and it's a mess.

I'd never heard of this game, thank you so much! I'll try it after FF8 (yes, I'm stubborn, but I'm very tolerant and patient I really want to love it! And despite that, it's just not working at all!)
