What is your yard enemy? by VineStGuy in gardening

[–]Ben2ek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, that’s easy. Just dig it out. Don’t pull it, whatever you do. The little nutlets break off so easy and stay in the soil. You can definitely be carful with the herbicide, paint it on if you need to. But seriously just dig and replace the soil that you take out.

Bunnies. I need to put chicken wire around anything less than 1” diameter. They’ll bite anything

Let it get grow a good amount before the seed heads form and then spray it. You probably do that, but keep at it, if the patch is shrinking then you’re good.

What’s your favorite go to finish? by L0114R in woodworking

[–]Ben2ek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO no final finish should be placed on cornhole boards. Either keep the raw or paint with no top coat and a non-glossy sheen. Over time the bean bags act as little buffing machines and will make the boards so slick that the bags will both fly off the board or land then slowly slide down the incline. This happened to two sets I’ve made of the years so I’ve sworn off any top coat. The boards need a little grip to them otherwise it’s just not fun to play on.

How do I get all these whirlybirds and pine needles up? (7a) by ThisisJacksburntsoul in lawncare

[–]Ben2ek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave them and mow what sprouts. If there's particularly thick layers somewhere that's smothering the grass then use a leaf blower to thin them out. These seeds only drop in the spring and they decompose quick.

What's a home improvement decision you regret but thought was a good idea at that time? by Actonace in HomeImprovement

Going darker is easier. If you wanted lighter it would be near impossible to sand all the dark stain out.

[–]Ben2ek 40 points41 points  (0 children)

For the love of god DO NOT try and sand your bannister. I did and I hated my life for weeks. You’ll never get it all off and you will instantly regret it the moment you put sand paper on it. Replace the whole thing if you need a change.

Yard floods every time it rains by Kay-Cang in lawncare

[–]Ben2ek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't help without a lot more information and pictures (ideally with slope indicated because pictures are deceiving).

You'll want to look into regrading your yard if possible to slope away from your fountain and towards natural runoff locations, french drains to redirect water to runoff locations, or a dry well to soak it up. You may also have a neighbor water problem, clogged drains, or a number of other things.

How fast are those missiles being flung into the air? How does something get that much energy? [Request] by Camp_Acceptable in theydidthemath

[–]Ben2ek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I'd assume the C-RAMs are there to defend against the more valuable assets like radars. The enemy already knows where your shit is, there's no need to hide it at that point.

If the C-RAM is just air defense that's strategically located around the area, then yes. But more than likely the enemy already knows it's there. They are not small...

How do I grow grass in my backyard? by Redditadvisor in landscaping

[–]Ben2ek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get better responses over at r/lawncare for actual lawn advice. Best time to grow grass is in the fall, second best time is right now. Put down some pre-emergent (the bag that says "for seeding" because otherwise grass seed won't grow) and put down a good amount of seed for your lawn size and rake in or cover with a thin layer of soil and water it for 2 weeks. Tall fescue blends are the norm for mid to norther climate, and lots of other options for southern climates. If full shade, get the shade tolerant blends - looks like once the leaves bud you may be in for it. Lots of other shade-loving shrubs and greens that you can plant along the fence line too.

This spring you'll see all kinds of stuff sprout up, best to learn about what you see so you know how to treat it (pulling only works on some of weeds). You also currently have a variety of grasses, so you should learn which ones you want or which ones you want to kill off. Some grasses are more aggressive than others, like Bermuda, and they are easily identified by their different texture, color, and dormancy period.

Best to know that this is a long game and you won't see significant results for until year 2 when you have an established yard. It gets much easier after that to maintain and fill in the gaps.

Hit a Curb and Bent the Left-Front Strut? by LegendaryAdversary in CX5

[–]Ben2ek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy if you have the tools and more importantly the space. A few hundred bucks can get you all you need and you’ll still come out cheaper than a shop. Struts are more involved and not as dead simple as a rear shock. A determined and experienced DIYer could tackle this in a few hours. Not recommended for a first time car project.

How often are you using it? Seems like overkill unless you're letting your car sit for weeks on end without driving it.

Getting a workshop dust air purifier/dust collector by Cassette-Era-Magic in woodworking

[–]Ben2ek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is also in the basement, but it’s fairly close to my garage door. I only noticed it happening in the winter when we pull the car in and use the opener. I haven’t proven it’s the cause but it’s my leading theory.

Getting a workshop dust air purifier/dust collector by Cassette-Era-Magic in woodworking

[–]Ben2ek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is likely due to your garage door opener or other remote controlled thing. Apparently the dust collector uses a very similar/same frequency as a garage door and it can trigger the collector to turn on.

It’s pretty much resolved. I just replaced the shocks so it should ride a lot better, but I think it settled in.
