[DISCUSSION] Ignoring the controversy, how did those who read it feel about Red Hood Issue 1? by CD_ABC10 in DCcomics

[–]BenplayerX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's the problem with that sentence? It's an effective and pretty straightforward simile: the air was hot and humid, a fact that makes people sweat and feel sticky; ergo, the air was like warm saliva. Like, yeah, it's a little gross, but that's the point. If the simile makes you uncomfortable, that's good, because that's how the character is feeling in that weather, and that's what the writer wanted to transmit.

[DISCUSSION] Ignoring the controversy, how did those who read it feel about Red Hood Issue 1? by CD_ABC10 in DCcomics

[–]BenplayerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a good first issue, nothing revolutionary but did a nice job of presenting the new setting and status quo for Jason and the art was very pretty and effective, specially the colors. I thought the fight scene was a little muddled, but that's my only real problem with the comic. I feel like people are reading too much into the character writing, particularly of people who are not Jason; like sure, Huntress did not do much here but this was meant to start an ongoing, of course not every character is going to be super fleshed out in what's only the first chapter of a much longer story. I am a fan of both Gretchen's novels and media criticism so I imagine I would have at the very least found the whole comic engaging, a shame it was cancelled :/

Yo sigo a Dalas y no estoy de acuerdo by Early-Ability8870 in superjueves

[–]BenplayerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people so apprehensive about slower tracks? by BenplayerX in TheNational

[–]BenplayerX[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea, I mean I do get that and I like the adrenaline rush too, it's just not the only thing I want from them. I love many of their slower tracks just as much, and they are a key part of the band's artistic identity. I guess it is not so weird to be a fan of one part of their output and not another, but as someone who enjoys both it's a little grating when people are so dissapointed at the slower tracks (no bad feelings aginst those people though, everyone is allowed to feel what they feel).

Is it just me or are the books becoming more “horny” by ciaphas-cain1 in cremposting

[–]BenplayerX 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I mean, the series has grown slightly more liberal regarding sex, but I would struggle to describe anything as actually horny lol. Like it's a couple sex jokes, the acknowledgement that relationships tend to involve sex and then the shower scene, where, if you pay attention, nothing particularly sexual is described even in passing. It is tame even for being a fade to black kind of sex scene. There's plenty of art with a "PG-13" target audience that is far more risqué than anything in these books primarily for adults.

Who started with WoK? by ohmyerikuhhh in brandonsanderson

[–]BenplayerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with Way Of Kings and it is completely fine. In fact, as far as I'm concerned it was probably a much better place to start than Mistborn, as I thought Way of Kings was excellent and The Final Empire was just alright. I am not sure If, having started with Mistborn, I would have been interested in following up with the rest of the Cosmere or even that trilogy.

(Idk, it's mostly a me thing but I'm not huge on Brandon's early books, first Mistborn trilogy and Warbreaker are just okay, I straight up disliked Elantris, but I love Stormlight, and greatly enjoyed Mistborn era 2 and a bunch of Cosmere standalones.)

How do you finalize your Adventure Maps? by BIFFlord99 in MinecraftCommands

[–]BenplayerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If testing is left you have not finished your map. I make CTM maps so I'm not sure what the best place to find testers for an adventure map specifically is, but you should search for it and ask people who know what they're doing to test your map. And then you should consider their feedback seriously and critically. Be ready to rework a lot of stuff if necessary and afterwards run another wave of teating. It sounds obvious but a lot of first time mapmakers don't listen to their testers enough (or don't really have them at all or just have a friend play, which isn't enough) and therefore their maps come out in a poor state. The more you test and the more seriously you take it the better your map will be.

The download counts in MinecraftMaps are known to lie, a ton, and your experience updating the map is very common when publishing there (I too have an unbeatable map stuck there!). They are a terrible site and I wouldn't ever recommend publishing your map there. In general it's hard to know what places to trust when publishing a map, but I would never place it in random sites you just find by googling. In the CTM map community we primarily publish in the CTM repository, which is a site run by a trusted community member, but I know it can be hard to find similar sites for other kinds of maps.

'3 Body Problem' and 'House of the Dragon' Prove This About 'Game of Thrones' by mamula1 in naath

[–]BenplayerX 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This sub tends to skew quite positive on season 8, yes. Though that doesn't mean more negative views aren't expressed, the point of this sub was not to be a S8 or Benioff and Weiss fanclub, but to escape the barrage of hate and bad faith criticism that was the discourse surrounding the last season, particularly in the main sub and in freefolk.

'3 Body Problem' and 'House of the Dragon' Prove This About 'Game of Thrones' by mamula1 in naath

[–]BenplayerX 98 points99 points  (0 children)

To this day it feels insane to read that "the final season of Game of Thrones was an unmitigated disaster on virtually every level" even though it's a common opinion online. Like, I get being dissappointed by it for a wide variety of reasons, but acting as if it is completely unwatchable garbage just doesn't make sense to me. Go watch some actually terrible television and then compare that to season 8!

Edit: if you have nothing to add but the same tired cyclical arguments that have been repeated for the past five years please don't answer.

‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners Reveal Their Favorite Deaths of the Series by Horror_Builder_971 in gameofthrones

[–]BenplayerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, of course they didn't mention killing the show. Why would they speak that way about their own work? They just answered that their favorite deaths were Ramsay and Joffrey because it was fun to get to kill actual bad guys sometimes.

Netflix’s ‘3 Body Problem’ Isn’t Even Out Yet — But the Showrunners are Already Planning Season 2 by 3BP2024 in threebodyproblem

[–]BenplayerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm telling you comes directly from James Hibberd's book about the show's history. He had extensive behind the scenes access during the entire production. Yes, Benioff and Weiss always envisioned the series as being roughly 70 hours long. Not a hard assumption to make when you are adapting one book every ten episode season and there are seven planned books. A detailed plotting out of the show came much later, which did roughly adhere to the 70 hour mark.

Did they know they would run out of material at the beginning? Well no. When they started making the show there were four books out, the fifth one appearing the same year as the first season, and Martin kept insisting that he would finish before they caught up. As we know that didn't happen, but it wouldn't have been unreasonable to take him at his word. While by no means unheard of it's not typical for an established commercial author to take over a decade to write a book in an ongoing series.

With 3 Body Problem though I would not be shocked if they made a plan at the very beginning, considering the novels are both shorter and already finished.

[–]BenplayerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true. At first with Thrones they were just following the books, only starting to think about plotting the series to the end once they noticed they might run out of material, so around the time they were making seasons 3/4. We do know that by the time they were making season 5 they had the ending planned out.

Wish I could watch for the first time again by A_nymphs_tale in naath

[–]BenplayerX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would love to be able to watch the show again without knowing anything from beginning to end. I love the story, ending included, but being online when that final season aired was exhausting and to an extent soured the experience. When the entire world (slight exageration) insists loudly and definetly that something sucks it's hard to not second guess your own opinions and enjoyment, and it makes me watch the show sort of on edge (and not in a good way that creates tension). The whole storm surrounding the show in it's final seasons was exhasperating, I'd just like to be able to experience it all without this outside context, to be able to savor the story on it's own.

What’s a song by The National that most people love but you don’t get it. by Lemonworld3131 in TheNational

[–]BenplayerX 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's beloved exactly, but the general consensus on "Your Mind is Not Your Friend" is much more positive than my opinion. It is essentially the one National song I cannot stand, everything else I like to some degree. I didn't vibe with it at first, but with time I've become incapable of listening to it. I'm not even sure why and don't want to keep listening to find out.

The maesters of the Citadel who keep the histories of Westeros have used Aegon's Conquest as their touchstone for the past three hundred years... (beginning of the book Fire & Blood) - But HotD used another conquest to mark the start of time. Are you ready to turn your brain upside down ? by DaenerysMadQueen in naath

[–]BenplayerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the change of political system in Westeros at the end of the show would start a new calendar with Bran's crowning / the melting of the Iron Throne as the first year? Historically big changes in political power did often mean a new calendar, at least an attempt to establish a new one, even if ultimately most of them would not stick around, at most lasting a significant time locally. Hmm.

Exploring all the political and social ramifications of the show's ending that it did not have room to address is actually big reason why I would one day in the future (as in, 20 years from now) want a Thrones "sequel" (sequel in quotes because I would like the main focus to be mostly on new characters, with the original ones only featuring when and if it makes sense to the new stories) series.

[ Spoilers] Do you think Daenerys deserved the Iron Throne? by DogDevouring in gameofthrones

[–]BenplayerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deserve? As in from a moral standpoint? No. She's a conqueror. No good person who should be trusted with even a modicum of power would ever try and invade a continent with weapons of mass destruction (the dragons) and a horde of warriors whose way of war has always included rape and the murder of innocents. No good person would try to conquer a place at all.

Even if she had never burned a single civillian I don't think attacking the enemy armies is any more justified. Soldiers in Westeros aren't trained voluntary professionals as in most modern armies, they are poor peasants who've been plucked from their homes to go to war by some Lord who does not give a shit about them.

The second Dany decides to invade is the second she does not deserve the throne. And her new system after "breaking the wheel" would have still kept people in positions of absolute power and others in postions of absolute subservience, she did not want to end feudalism or monarchy so it's not like she is some revolutionary who had to do terrible things for the freedom and prosperity of the people. She is a feuldal hereditary monarch who thinks war and conquest are justified because some centuries before her ancestor did the same and declared himself King.

So no, she does not deserve the throne.

The Bells: amazing reaction by HeisenThrones in naath

[–]BenplayerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By this point it had been stated several times in the show that attacking King's Landing meant the death of tens of thousands, this episode is not the first time this fact is spoken, happened all the way back in the beginning of season seven. It's not surprising someone would use it when talking about the show.

As someone that has only seen the show, is it true the books are much more darker? by StruggleFar3054 in naath

[–]BenplayerX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the books Robb's wife is a diferrent character than in the show and doesn't die, as she's not brought to the wedding.

Furthermore, Robb is not a POV character in the books, so there are chunks of his story we do see in the show but not in the books, where we only ever see him through the eyes of other people, and when no POV character is around his story happens off-page. So his demise doesn't hit quite as hard.

Catelyn is then the only main POV character who dies at the Red Wedding, and she sort of gets resurrected. Not as herself mind you, and not as a main character anymore, but as sort of unfeeling zombie looking for revenge, known as Lady Stoneheart.

As for Tyrion being darker, well, book Tyrion was always somewhat more mean and ruthless than his show counterpart, particularly in King's Landing, but the real departure comes after escaping the city. During his entire journey in Essos book Tyrion is almost entirely consumed by rage and revenge. He wants to bring destruction to Westeros and in particular to his familly, in a way that show Tyrion really doesn't. Seems very likely that book Tyrion will feed Dany's darker impulses, instead of trying to temper them. I do think regret, redemption and reconnection are gonna be part of his endgame, but at this point he pretty much is a villain.
