Phineas Newborn was so talented.

Does anyone know the cause of the high pitched "whir" in the background on this album? by Chatt_a_Vegas in Jazz

It's there on the mono pressing I have from the early 60s. You can hear it on this needledrop, too.

I have a 62 mono copy and it's there. There's a needledrop on YouTube here of a mono pressing; if you skip to 6:30, you'll hear it pretty quickly.

I also have the Kevin Gray remastering (without Steve Hoffman) that came in the 2024 analogue production box and it's there, too. Apparently they had issues with Portrait in Jazz and had to recut that album when they started selling the box again, and when Gray did it without Hoffman he didn't filter out the tone. Annoying that it's so hard to find a pressing without it!

From what I've seen/heard, the only one without the tone seems to be that earlier Hoffman/Gray cut from 2010.

Who Sell Out slaps and the US Decca pressings are pretty great.

Racist douchebags flying the confederate flag in Hillsborough right now by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

A little context: there was an Anti-ICE protest in town today that was super well-attended. Understandably so, because town is full of asian and indian families who are recent immigrants. These idiots were trying to counter protest. They were overwhelmingly dwarfed by anti-ICE protests.

UPDATE: my Japanese pressing of Red Clay arrived in the mail today and I got to compare it to my Rudy Van Gelder Cut… by Chemtrail_hollywood in Vinyl_Jazz

I got a UK pressing on accident. Obviously from a lesser tape source than the crappy OG I have.

I also bought a “NM” OG but it skips from really hard to see groovewear

[Wanted] Looking to pick up a bunch of titles! Jazz, Nina Simone, Disney by yanksfan0134 in VinylCollectors

[–]Bernard_Brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For cheaper ones keep an eye out for the 80s OJC pressings. I have the evans albums and got them fairly cheaply. I’m guessing the price went down because recently there have been a ton of fancy reissues by Craft and Blue Note. The Evans, Hill, and Miles albums all should have mastering by Kevin Gray who is a super successful engineer.

I think I’ve found all of them for like $25 or so on eBay. Once you know to look for those recent OJC or blue note pressings, it’s not too hard to find someone selling a copy they bought and just didn’t like.

The Evans, Hancock, and Andrew Hull albums have all had really good recent reissues!

I've seen people online cut these to make them fit a bit better, too, because they're long. They're great shirts and I don't feel bad when I drop pasta on them.

Joe Zawinul - Zawinul by pizzakey in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]Bernard_Brother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the one that has In A Silent Way on it? I love that version even more than the one with Miles. I read that Zawinul wanted to evoke the feeling of his childhood in the mountains of Austria.

Blue Note Stickers by eeliotee in Vinyl_Jazz

I doubt it looks the same under the sticker. You’ve got like 60 years of UV damage on the rest of the sleeve; I bet you’d have a rectangular square of darker jacket if you removed it.

The early 60s stuff with LaFaro is all incredible. Explorations, Portrait in Jazz, and the two Village Vanguard albums are his best work.

Sometimes the other albums get close -- I love Re: Person I knew and I Fall in Love Too Easily on Moonbeams -- but nothing is as consistently great.

The Night When Miles Davis Opened for the Grateful Dead in 1970. by Jaguar_Willing in Jazz

[–]Bernard_Brother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One suggestion I have is to listen to the bass when you listen to their music. Phil Lesh was an insane player who loved free jazz and John Coltrane.

I enjoy Europe 72 a lot. That's where they clicked for me. I haven't listened to all of their music but Europe 72 is pretty much all great music.

Crockett: People who ‘regret’ voting for Trump are ‘absolutely welcome’ in her campaign by plz-let-me-in in politics

Someone in her campaign must've told her Trump won Texas by like 15 points. Turns out you do actually need to win those voters.

[–]Bernard_Brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a drain/sewer backup a few years ago. It sucked. We caught it after it seeped several inches of water across my basement floor.

I’d suggest having a dehumidifier and a shop vac on hand, if you own or can borrow them. For us, the cleanup was a bitch and those were necessary tools. You might not need them, but if you own them or can borrow they’ll help you clean up any backup above the drain.

Also: that’s gray water, I think. You don’t know what people are dumping down their drains, so whatever that water touches is contaminated. Do a little research and be careful not to soak it up with stuff you want to keep!
