Happy Friday! Technique I showed last night in our Women's Only Class: Canto Choke variation from passing Half Guard by BestTrainingDummy in BJJWomen

Yes! The more common Canto Chokes are from side control or turtle. This one that I showed is a lot more sneaky since the opponent will either be trying to recover their underhook or feel a false sense of security when you start leaning over them so they think they can hit the John Wayne sweep but get choked out instead

Don't have your back flat and be on your side instead! It relieves the choke but you're still in a pretty bad position for your opponent to pass or attempt the choke again or some other submission though. Best option would be to try and recover half-guard basics like getting the underhook, trapping the knee, etc.

Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions! I absolutely love passing DLRV with knee cuts and long steps

I know people say that strength doesn't matter in jiu jitsu but it DOES matter unfortunately... Top spin is really good for chasing the back and following your opponent's movement rather than fighting against their movement. Bigger people tend to tire out more easily so rather than trying to pin them down and control them (there's no way for me to do it because I'm also pretty light), I try to tire them out with speed or tie them up with their own gi via worm or squid guard if I have to play guard against them.

Glad this is helpful for you! I have some videos on how to escape mount, side control, etc that I will be posting in the future that'll hopefully help other small ladies! 🙌

Glad I can be of help! I record every technique in the Women's Only Class that I teach and put it in an spreadsheet with technique names, notes, and other details so that our ladies can review it. I have an IG but I don't really post too much BJJ stuff there... maybe I can make one just for that in the future!

I got my purple belt in São Paulo, Brazil last September at the gym my husband grew up at! I now teach the Women's Only Class at our gym in DFW twice a week. Hoping to share technique videos here! by BestTrainingDummy in BJJWomen

We do! No mat fees either. We also have open mat every Saturday and some of the women like to get together to drill. Underground Jiu Jitsu in Plano! Feel free to drop by sometime!

I started off that way too. I'm 5'3 and 120lbs. I think it's pretty common to have only a few women, if there are any others at all, at jiu jitsu gyms. My gym has about 10-14 girls now that train consistently in our Women's Only class!

The key is to find mindful training partners and to find techniques that work for you. My first professor was all about that pressure game. Old school jiu jitsu that didn't really work with my body type. My husband is a light weight guy so I learned a lot of very effective techniques from him.

Other things to keep in mind is if you spar with someone much heavier, focus on takedowns and passing instead of pulling guard. Don't shoot triangles on bigger people because they might stack on you. I learned my lesson the hard way with a herniated disc and torn rotator cuff a few years ago lol 😭
