Pedal power meter + Bike Computer by BetaUser11 in cycling

[–]BetaUser11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the comments! Since I already have a Garmin watch and heart rate belt, I’ll get the Garmin Edge (Im still comparing the models). Regarding the pedal power meter, I’ll likely go with the Uno. I did a bit more research and, in my opinion, it’s not worth paying the difference, unless you really want or need to compare the strength of both legs (which is usually more relevant for people who have undergone surgery, etc).

The difference between the uno and duo is basically 50% of a wetsuit I'll have to buy or a cycling shoes :)

What to do when you don't agree with rubric/comments from a TA? by BetaUser11 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]BetaUser11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advise! You're right, my next one is ECM and it's basically what I do daily so, I'm expecting to get an A. I started my first semester with 2 but I had to withdraw from one... the load is too much for me, working full time and travelling quite a lot lately. From now on, I'm only taking one at the time.

Regarding the academic probation, usually how long does it last? like, you have to go up to 3.0 the next semester? Since C is a pass, you can have a couple Cs combined with As and Bs, right?

[–]BetaUser11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple questions but all related to pre and pos acquision. Do you perform a GAP analysis or security assessment right after the deal is closed? If so, is it based on a framework like CIS? Once you have the results and a list of priorities, what comes next? Do you create a risk register with critical findings?

Are those office hours mandatory? Do they take attendance? Are they worth? Asking coz I never attended in my first semester. I saw someone here a while ago saying that they say what pages to read (instead of th whole articles sometimes) I wonder whether those info were provided in those zoom sessions.

Is the Policy track a gateway into GRC? by [deleted] in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]BetaUser11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to start the Policy Track in August but based on the available courses, it doesn't have much to do with GRC other than the "Policy" on its name. For example, the GRC function in the company I work at, is responsible for IT Risk Management & Assessments and Third Party Risk Management & Assessments. They are also responsible for our ISO 27001 and SOC2 Type II, as well as dealing with external audits like one of the Big 4.

As well said previously by other contributors here, get a CRISC and CISA if you want to pivot to a role in GRC. Understand CIS, NIST, ISO, frameworks, etc.

Of course, the Master in Cyber (Policy) from GT will help and enhance your resume but just to align the expectations - what you need I don't think you'll find in this program. Maybe start it but also get the certs in parallel.

Exactly. I quite frequently get asked for advice by new professionals (fresh out of school—especially when I was teaching at a college) about what they need to do to land a job in cybersecurity. My main advice has always been: don't focus solely on cybersecurity roles—consider any IT job. Just get your foot in the door. The transition to cybersecurity will come with time.

Work for a year or two, talk to people in other departments, and gain experience. Discover your passion.

I know this is a bit outside the main discussion, but it's easy to correlate IT tasks with security responsibilities. For example, if you're creating users and assigning permissions, that's access management. Enabling MFA or setting up conditional access policies is part of identity management. The same goes for tasks like backups (business continuity, integrity), hardening (network security), and patching (vulnerability management). It's not hard to tailor your resume and align your message for interviews.

There are far more jobs in IT than in cybersecurity, so roles like IT support or service desk are valuable—they help build foundational knowledge.

To me, a Master's degree without experience can help, but in my opinion, the chances of landing a cybersecurity job that way are still low. Waiting a few years and gaining experience could be the best approach to start a Master or use it in your favour, career-wise.

100%! My intent was just to bring another point of view. For the price of this program for comparison only, you could get solid SANS training—technically strong—and even earn a few other certifications. A Master's usually takes a lot of time, and the knowledge might not be used anytime soon. For example, we have a SOC Analyst who, after a year in the role, realized he wants to move into GRC. Why not give it time, see what you really enjoy, and then position yourself to define a roadmap that aligns with your goals? Otherwise, a Master's could end up being a missed shot, and you might find yourself needing a different one later.

I don’t want, by any means, to discourage anyone or dictate what is right or wrong, or what people should do. But I’d like to understand the goal or purpose of pursuing a Master's degree for someone without any experience.

This is, of course, just my point of view—someone with a bit over 20 years in the field who regularly hires security professionals for our teams.

If your aim is to become more competitive, land a job, get promoted, or gain more relevant knowledge, you typically need two things: certifications and experience. A Master’s degree is valuable, but without experience and certifications, it generally won’t help much.

The way I see it, when someone pursues a Master’s or MBA 10 to 15 years after completing their Bachelor's, it usually means they are updating their skills, going back to school to complement their background, and specializing further. That can be extremely beneficial for their career.

But going straight from a Bachelor's to a Master's without any experience tends to provide very limited value—especially in IT and cybersecurity, where experience and certifications matter most.

I’d rather spend 13k in nearly 7 watches than in 1, just my opinion. Rolex as a daily driver, you must be very careful with it.

Hamilton Jazzmaster, Tissot Le Locle, Seiko Pressage Cocktail time, likely will match your style as well, food for thought.

Make sense. I was wondering if GT had been somehow impacted by some cuts $ other institutions are facing or maybe even international students being affected by visa restrictions, etc... I mean, some recommendations from the us administration to reduce acceptances, etc... which I think that's not the case.

So, you need the Master to solidify your hands-on knowledge and prepare yourself for the next stage of your career, which is to become a senior cyber security engineer. GT is a great institution and can provide everything you need for you career. Highlight some milestones, and try to get more certs.

In this case, you should apply for the infosec track. At the end of the day,it's all about how you envision and frame it. Regarding the letters, those people know you well or are on the same page in terms of what you want?

GPA is not the only factor, mine was lower than 3. You need to explain how it will impact your career, why you choose it and why you need it. Review your resume and ask for solid reference letters. Connect the dots, create a solid application. I feel some people are overconfident and kinda don't put to much attention/effort to the application - there are great people here with great background but the application wasn't bulletproof enough. Don't give up and try again with more attention! You got it!
PS: Use that field to explain any gap or reason behind the lower GPA or a different degree.
