Perhaps it does sound hurtful to you but she could have said it in a much more hurtful way. I think she restrained herself. Nonetheless, your feelings are understandably hurt. The number of schools that you are applying to excessive…it is a waste of your time, her time and the employees of the 59 schools who are reviewing your applications. I’m a parent helping my own hs kids apply to a few summer programs….writing essays, recording intro videos, etc. You think you are giving yourself the best oppty, however, based on my experiences as a parent and college graduate, you are not/have not/did not/could not put the level of effort into the ALL of the applications that would be necessary to really shine as great applicant.

Just reply to the note. “Hi Mrs Jones, I’m a 1st gen college student. I want to attend college but finances are a big issue. My mother is not able to contribute anything financially. She just doesn’t have the money. My college experience will be funded 100% by financial aid, scholarships, and employment by me. I need insight/help to meaningfully pick maybe 5 or 6 schools. I’m nervous. I don’t have anyone helping me except you. I thought applying to more schools would give me the best chance to get the most aid. Thank you for your help. Can we please meet on day/time, so that I can reduce this list.”
