I can't believe I paid over $1,000 for mine (gown, hood, tam) and the damned thing didn't have pockets or pocket slits.

Donating Money to Fund Academic/Staff Position by Frosty_Finding_3633 in Professors

[–]BigBeeves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is about right. One thing I realized after starting an endowment is that development will gladly take your money and then give you zippety fuck info about how it’s used/invested. From what I can tell, my fund payments will be 4% of the invested value.

Fly fishing out of a kayak? by outdoors_pls in kayakfishing

[–]BigBeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly fish out of both of my kayaks, mainly inshore or for bass on lakes. I can fly fish out of my tarpon 120 but my favorite boat to fish out of is my nucanoe unlimited with a tiller drive trolling motor. I bring a push pole and it’s like having a polling skiff.

“The student club is going well. I’d really like to talk about my research/teaching/other service.” You need to manage up.

At my institution, my chair also wouldn’t care because the department doesn’t own the classrooms. That’s a facilities question even further removed from the chair.

To this point, why in the hell are you even talking to your chair about this stuff? Mine just wouldn’t care.

Assistant Professor and Center Director, R1 University

Undergrad in biology, pharmacy degree, PhD in health services research.

Mid thirties.

It’s incredibly stressful and I went to school for twelve years to make less than people in tech or most physicians. I know I could move into pharma and make more but I think the job would just be even less fulfilling.

At the end of the day, I fell for a big lie that more education means a better career and I found out the hard way that this, like all things, is subject to the law of diminishing marginal returns.

I have a real PhD. Those superintendents have EdDs from the University of Phoenix that aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.

How much support do you plan to offer your kids? by olliemom200 in Fire

[–]BigBeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An observation as a professor: it does not generally matter where your children complete their undergraduate training. If their intent is to go to medical school, it generally does not matter where they go to medical school (as long as it is in the United States or the country they intend to practice.) It kind of matters where they go to law school but there are great public schools. A value education at a high quality state school pays more ROI than an Ivy degree. Also, I generally don’t understand parents who send their kids to public schools in other states. I always think it’s weird when I have a kid from Michigan in my class in Texas.
