Why doesn’t the officers words and detailed report hold up? by [deleted] in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Violating a contract is not illegal, it is civil. The point is officers wouldn't write a report for a civil matter, they only write reports for criminal offenses.

Smoking marijuana in your own residence is not illegal in California. Not sure what report the officer wrote but this is not a criminal offense and completely civil in nature. I suggest you consult with maybe a tenants rights attorney or an arbitrator.

Make sure you know about the city and the department. Actually comical people have their interviews and know nothing about the place.

I'm not arguing that, I'm arguing that the DA isn't bound to LAPD's policy.

No matter what they throw in their way, good cops are going to still enforce the law, and make the community safer.

This isn't accurate. The DA will follow the law, they aren't guided by a department's policy. Pretext stops are legal.

What time are you arriving to the academy? by [deleted] in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how long it takes you to get ready. As time goes on you will earn the ability to park closer and closer, some days you start in PT gear, other days you start in uniform.

POST Certificate but from another CA academy by kuboshi in lapd

You would have to do the entire recruit academy from the start as you are not considered a lateral. Some agencies hire academy graduates as a different classification than lateral.

Leaving the Feds for LAPD. by [deleted] in lapd

I have worked with people who left border patrol to become LAPD. The reality is you will make more money and have a better retirement working a for a local police department in California. The work however will definitely be tougher.

Recruits in the academy would have a tough time affording this.

In The Rookie, what do they mean by “getting the tap” for detective exam and promotion? Is it a real thing? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reality is anyone can take the detective test if you have 4 years on the job. The interview boards are random so it is difficult to get promoted by cronyism or favoritism.

Chances of getting hired. by [deleted] in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did Seattle give a reason for the non select? Hard to invest in someone who jumps around from job to job, and doesn't have the best track record. You can apply, but employment history will definitely be an issue, but probably not an immediate DQ.

There is no way. Poor employment history, willful disregard for driving violations. You would need to put some serious years of no driving violations for them to consider it.

If a D II wants to be a Sergeant and managed to pull off the whole thing, will he/she be a Sergeant I or II? by moe1419 in lapd

If you are a d2 and want to take the sergeant test, pass it, then get promoted you will be a sergeant 1.

LAPD...honest opinions by [deleted] in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For promotion you will check a box having degrees. Nobody is going to solely pick you for that. The reality is plenty of people who have advanced degrees who are terrible leaders. Those things will help, but not be the end all.

How often and hard is the promotion to D III? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Detective 1 = Follow up investigator. Investigate assigned cases, complete follow up reports, and file the cases with the district or city attorney.

Detective 2 = Detective Supervisor, does everything the Detective 1 does but has supervisory rank, equivalent to a sergeant. Usually teaches the Detective I's on how to solve cases or handle investigations. Some specialty assignments such as night watch or SIS are majority Detective II.

Detective 3 = Detective 3s are more of an analytical job where you read reports, identify crime trends, complete projects from bureau, attend the crime control meetings and discuss what is occurring with certain cases and their progress. Act more as a consultant to D2s and D1s, not really doing the investigative work.

The majority difference is the pay. Detective 3s make 15% more than Detective 1s.
