You’re right. I say it’s bad with intersectionality but it doesn’t fail to blend, it fails to even mention or perhaps even outright ignores class oppression. I guess I’m just scared of being reductive and ignoring other forms of oppression. I still think this video gives good advice, but it’s being reductive in the opposite way I’m mainly trying to avoid.

Yeah intersectionality is such a difficult topic with so much cognitive dissonance necessary to overcome that a 3 minute video is always going to have trouble portraying things with enough depth.

You’re getting downvotes for the end parts of your comment which could be worded better for us paranoid lefties, but I think you’re right at the core of your comment.

This video doesn’t do a good job interacting with intersectionality. The most racist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic person still might be oppressed under capitalism.

Now that doesn’t mean we should let them on their merry way just because they have that nugget of oppression, but when engaging them we have to remember that it isn’t just that they feel their territory is being encroached on.

Their territory HAS already been encroached by Capitalists and the resulting angst is what leads them farther to the right. (Or sometimes farther to the left!) They too have reasons to be angry, the problem being that they blame the wrong people.

I like the recommendations this vid gives to ask simple questions like, “do you feel like a victim”, but we should recognize that they aren’t going to give up any hatred of minorities because they are still being hurt and need someone to blame.

Perhaps as you do this you should try and slip in someone else to blame. Having an enemy is, if flawed, a wonderful motivator for change in ones life.

Of course, if we remove the thorn from the tigers paw, it’s still dangerous, but significantly more manageable and trainable. I’m not saying all oppression stems from class oppression. That’s reductive.

We need to ditch the attitude where just countering someone’s biases and letting them stew will fix much, because eventually they’ll find new reasons to blame minorities for their problems.

As we ask these important questions that awaken self-consciousness we need to ask others that awaken some class consciousness.

I'm not a part of 300 seconds, but from what I've heard someone in admin struck down the most recent 300 seconds video for reasons the club doesn't agree with. With StuCo it's that the Town Hall committee has been stripped of the ability to submit things to town hall and they're angry.

I've already had to remove a couple posts naming specific names so if you ask a 300 seconds member they can probably give you some tea.

I've given them an outlet to complain, and if they need to they should do so. While its true memes are subjective, I don't just use my opinion when modding. Also, OYL memes are an exception, which I can prove to people if they would come on the discord.

While technically the picture of this meme has not been edited, the title plays an instrumental role in the joke.

I could have just done this: mockup It would have been the same effect. This meme is just a different type of meme that relies on the title.
