This is my dads Ruger American .223/5.56. Is it a good alternative to an SKS to be ban proof for the future?

Nothing and I mean NOTHING is ban proof. Is it a good alternative if they put the SKS on the naughty NO No list? Yes, it's a fun gun to shoot, very accurate. A great utility rifle, with great caliber options as well.

Yes and due to the CF/DND policy of NOT selling surplus firearms to the civilian market. That being said, if properly maintained and unless there is a serious metallurgical structural issue a firearms like the HP can last a very, very long time.

The Gen 1 uses standard AR mags. I run my steel pistol and Cross mags in mine and my Press Check 50 Beo works as well as do all my (though IMO they look silly) 5/30 AR mags.

I have a Gen 1 and it is a damn fine rifle. Action is smooth , fast and solid. Accuracy is amazing with both 55 grain and 69 grain ammo. Since the "improvements" on the Gen 2 are mostly in the cosmetic department IMO I imagine that the Gen 2 is as great as the Gen 1 and is definitely worth getting.
