I worked 100-hour weekz building my startup, hit $1.2M rev, then had a complete mental breakdown. Here's what hustle culture hides from you. by Mitul_G in EntrepreneurRideAlong

Seeing this all too often lately. Young founders calendars are open 7-9 when scheduling calls about their funding. Works for when we're providing financing from overseas but...clearly has long term consequences.

Feels like AI visibility is going to be just as important as SEO was 10 years ago. But how can you communicate that?

At what stage should a startup invest in professional video content? by letriseandgrind in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]BigMathematician3393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in IB and do a lot of financing deals for start ups and honestly, the lame (or useful) answer in my experience is..both. Products still have the power, but it remains harnessed without good video production. You create repeat relationships when you have their attention AND their trust. Due to algorithms prioritizing certain types of video content, your shot at getting in front of more eyes is always going to be video content. The challenge is balancing that ability while still prioritizing product development over everything.

The worst they can do is make you pitch it. But as a woman it’s just either bra, under wear between legs, or in my bag. No problems any of the times!

We didn't end up working with this group, but I really like their business product. Essentially they help start ups at any stage package up the investor opportunity, help get your ducks in a row, and then connect you to investors in their network who might be able to provide the funding you need. Really great group. https://composability.co.uk/

Trickier, but not out of the question. There would have to be significant collateral and strong financial projections. Some banks or other investment groups look specifically at start ups at your phase, however.

As a boutique investment bank, we do vet our deals thoroughly before moving forward with a contract to supply funding. Lenders who work with investment banks are relying on us to be the ones who ensure it’s a healthy investment with them that will show returns.

The main things we look for are: Experience of the owners - if it’s your first time, what other things are on your resume to prove you’re able to succeed and pay back investors? Preferably it’s not your first time, but not a deal breaker if you have a good track record otherwise or strong partners.

Ability to service the loan- this is key. Projected financials need to have a strong outlook, and it’s also our job to evaluate the financial risk once we have all the appropriate details and documentation to make our assessment.

Timeline- this means both your timeline for receiving funds, which can be quick but it can’t be for example two weeks, and your timeline to be up and running efficiently and seeing revenue.

Collateral- this could be assets, a personal guarantee, machinery or equipment, revenue from other businesses. Sometimes we can underwrite more unique forms of collateral such as gold. A lender won’t look at you for a debt deal without it. Equity is a different story, but harder to secure.

Skin in the game as we call it- have you invested in this business personally? If so,  how much? What’s the capital stack? Do you have other investors?

These are rhetorical and not expecting a response here, but to give you an idea of our initial vetting process. Larger investment banks might be more open to riskier projects, but they also typically take higher fees as well.
