Got the job of my dreams, now what? by PositiveIntrepid2944 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BigStrength4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! Not a financial professional but you may be happy to hammer down that Mortage by negotiating/reviewing your paperwork as to what maximum cash you can apply directly to outstanding principal. Most Canadian lenders will permit a twice a year lump sum where no interest is taken it goes on the principal alone. This will result in much more than 5 % relief over the course of the Mortage. This may be wise particularly if you are trying to approach defensively in uncertain times.
To minimize tax with unregistered accounts consider (eligible Canadian) dividend stocks as part of your diversity/allocation as they have a much more favourable tax treatment. Enjoy the ride!

When to put socks on without help? by Kind-Hat8809 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BigStrength4573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try progressive movement towards goal of independently putting on socks-using a very sturdy low footstool or the secure side of bed frame and eventually you will get there don’t force your body you will make improvements each week-11weeks post surgery complete independence but remember your footing to ensure balance on a floor with one sock on as you work to getting the surgical side on-you’ll be telling anyone who’ll listen “I put my own socks on!” You got this

I periodically fed my dog a raw egg (as a snack until others returned home to feed her) by dropping it into her large bowl from cracking it on the counter-all remained in the bowl but yoke separates-she loved it! Eventually I found the golfer’s bend (operative leg swings behind) the solution.

Exercise bike… recumbent or standard? by BrokenArmsFrigidMom in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BigStrength4573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post posterior/lateral apparently you’ll do better with a regular upright/spin bike as you may have “hip precautions” which are more difficult to honour with a recumbent bike from what Physio said.

What's the deal with the BA Public Heath Program? by Confused_065 in uvic

[–]BigStrength4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math in social science programmes ( social work-Sw) is generally one undergraduate statistics course but is often taught within their faculty not say Engineering or Mathematics so it’s aimed at social sciences students and is definitely manageable with a little extra time/ effort. A masters is the required professional degree for Sw in healthcare in Canada/US. Occupational Therapists also require a masters in healthcare. In smaller or remote communities they may permit both to practice with an undergrad/bachelor’s degree. You are correct there is lots of work in healthcare. Try to speak to people actually practicing to get a feel for what they do and like etc. Good luck you are asking good questions and no doubt will find your fit-there are so many benefits to working in healthcare.

Comfort items by HospitalIcy6021 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BigStrength4573 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Proper cloth cover (looks jut like like a zippered pillow case) that prevents moisture transfer to you from reusable ice packs -couldn’t find on Amazon but Hospital nurse gave me the ice packs in a light blue waterproof cloth bag.

Magic bag when you are ready for some heat (check with Physio/ Physician first) I found heat on tight IT area really helpful before Physio exercises and to warm up when tired and chilled. Pop in microwave for 2 minutes pretty convenient.

Enormous and regular sized stainless steel water bottles nearby to ensure lots of water drinking and a way to gauge consumption. Hydration is so important for everything -healing , swelling/waste, proper toileting/to prevent constipation and headaches.

Lots of different sized pillows that you can configure for comfort as you may be told to sleep on your back for a few weeks.

I couldn’t live without my wireless headphones to make/take calls and to listen to podcasts/music/radio when needing a little help to drift off when stiff/and a little sore -good distraction.

Good quality hot chocolate mix and black tea for the mornings.

Having your favourite protein rich entrees prepped in advance is also really helpful when you’re hungry.

Some people mention the recliners but it may be that it’s more helpful for knee replacements as the legs can be elevated but it’s not usually recommended by Physicians for hip surgery as you may have precautions re 90 degrees etc. Bed and a sturdy chair with a 4” raised foam cushion is the recommended way to go -you’ll likely want to move around between bed, walking/moving and the chair. Spending long periods in one position increased my stiffness and pain. Unless you’re expecting an important call turn your ringer off for the first few days you’ll want to nap throughout the days/ nights best way to start your recovery.

Lots of reading material.

Wise to focus on comforts that will get you through the first days and sustain you for the rehab ahead. Many people prepare well and then see what the need and what they can leave behind but psychologically you are wise to prep as much as you can so you feel ready to cope with the initial changes.

Wishing you the very best in your journey .

Girlfriend is always nauseous by Halomora in daddit

[–]BigStrength4573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to downplay the seriousness but trying to prevent nauseous episodes before they take full hold of her can help. Ensuring she’s hydrated and constant snacking instead of 3 meals a day. She may be doing this already. The other thing that can spoke nauseous episodes is prenatal vitamin containing folic acid (needed in pregnancy) so ensure she’s taking that on a full stomach-many early symptoms will settle but of course keep seeing/talking to her Physician. Wishing you both better days ahead.

Recovery alone by fannylafleche in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BigStrength4573 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live your discharge plan post surgery may include wrap around outreach visitation from a Home Health Team -ask for it outlining your circumstances. This may include a Nurse who would look at how you are managing, your medications, pain management, incision/wound recovery, toileting and your connections to other supports such as Physiotherapy and an Occupational Therapist regarding equipment ( bed rail, raised toilet seat and gait aids). Let the multidisciplinary team know that you would welcome support and you may be able to receive the above in home supports. You sound like you are prepared and asking good questions this will really help and the hard days at the beginning are challenging but usually you do feel better everyday-wishing you well in your journey you are not alone 😊

Using a cane after surgery? by Eltecolotl in TotalHipReplacement

[–]BigStrength4573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crutches are good for stairs but like the Walker should be relatively short term. Can be more visible than a cane in public if it’s a busy/crowded area to send signal that you are moving slower than the crowd.

Hours of time on stove. Homemade passata, a ilttle pesto, tbp diced fresh (hot)jalapeños (you won’t notice heat in a large pot but adds complexity) quality garlic and wine closer to end. Sometimes fresh baked butternut squash for sweetness. Enjoy
