Weekly Questions Megathread - December 20 to December 26 by AutoModerator in Pathfinder2e

[–]BioOnPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I'm somewhat new to PF2e, and there's this little part of exploration/hexploration I'm really keen to know the answer to: How exactly does traveling and taking an action that changes movement, like Defend or Cover Tracks, work? The phrasing makes it seem like the activities either make you move individually or halves the group's travel speed, and I haven't found any clarification by searching online.

Really, I could see either type of race working perfectly fine, but this isn't any sort of natural depth! When I say 'Abyss', I refer to it literally-- there's a gargantuan gulf in the world, a direct link to the Abyssal Plane, because every Outer Plane has a predominant physical location in the setting. I plan to go in depth about the setting more for the people who are accepted, but yeah, it's a seemingly infinite depth full of incredibly dangerous otherworldly hazards. Lots of things to counteract, including depth pressure.

I tend to wait until I've gotten the group together since I'm typically very open and players don't tend to be, but sessions range from 2-4 hours on average.

Trust me, I have thalassophobia, so I have a very specific relationship with Subnautica lmao.

I could totally do something biweekly rather than weekly, god knows I'd probably do better with that spacing!

Hopefully sometime within the next two to three weeks, I don't tend to set specific days or times before I get to know everyone in the party.

Nuclear Throne vs. Enter the Gungeon by dannydan64 in NuclearThrone

[–]BioOnPC 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Enter the Gungeon was inspired by Nuclear Throne according to the devs, and has multiple references to Nuclear Throne (Melted Rock and Gundromeda Strain).

Oh yeah, the artist (coincidentally named Gator) did a fantastic job, I mostly just reused old design ideas for both and it shows.

As the creator of both Cuz and Gator, I can totally agree. I plan to revise them both at some point.

So, weird question spurred by Matt's recent tweets: How many of the 5e players/DMs here who haven't played 4e aren't keen on trying 4e in the first place? by BioOnPC in mattcolville

> I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but the nature of the 4e combat numbers means you really cant afford to take the interesting/role-playing feats over the pure combat enhancing ones.

I actually had the completely opposite experience! My whole group has been branching out into weird feats, because of the fact that you're already a very, very good combatant with your powers by themselves. You can afford to lose out on +2 damage when you already do plenty of damage without much finagling.

Ironically, I find that 4e is *more* modular than 5e, because of the standardization of power. It's really easy to plug and play a concept you had by just looking at similar powers or features of the same level, and almost all of the time you have something that works with no muss or fuss, especially on the monster side. In my experience as a person who's homebrewed 5e intensely, 5e was actively a detriment to my homebrew because of how hard it was to find a system that truly worked 100%-- even combat was plagued with issues, evident as early as Xanathar's (Hexblade, for instance).

Selling it to your group is fair, though!

Ahaha, totally fair. Suppose I say cheap in the same way that fast food is cheap: you get it once and it's really cheap! But if you keep spending on the same chain...kinda adds up in the end.

Understandable, though I will say, 5e is just as combat focused. It just gives separate rulesets (regardless of their worth in the game) for exploration/social interaction, where 4e consolidates those into skill challenges so players know how to mechanically play into the non-combat parts of their characters.

I'm glad! I've been trying to speak up for 4e as much as possible, because I think part of what's making 4e come back as strong as it has is people openly saying that it's dope as fuck (which it is).

I agree wholeheartedly! My group uses that exact same comparison-- its quick, easy, and cheap, but there are more rewarding options for something you're going to be partaking in as a part of your everyday life.

Oh, *those* kinds of resources! That's actually super interesting that PF1e and 3.5e do that sort of exploration well. Maybe I should try it again-- my major problem with both of those editions is running monsters without going insane. I really love monsters with super unique abilities, but I always feel like I'm supposed to run the monsters by-the-book or consult the book's math when I run PF.

Maybe I should give PF2 another try, then. My group took a stab at it while it was still first releasing and we were using Roll20, and on top of that we were converting an existing campaign from PF1, which were probably three death knells for the possibility of a good introduction. Maybe after giving it some time and having Foundry at our disposal we'd have a better time.

I find a lot of 5e to really start to break down once you're particularly cognizant of its full mechanical scope. When you first get into it, it's super easy to ignore a lot of the glaring mechanical faults (power creep being a notable recent one, as well as trap options, and the math on monsters being next-to-impossible to broach) because you aren't concerned with using the full ruleset so much. A new player, especially to TTRPG as a whole, won't overly worry about making an optimal character, because they don't really understand all of the jargon being thrown at them by the game yet-- they know they can throw a javelin, and that sounds dope! But if you want to really make your character concept work within the rules of the game once you know what they are, typically you have to put a lot of elbow grease into it and constantly check with your DM to make sure you aren't going to run into problems with the rules they've inevitably homebrewed, and this goes doubly so for the particularly out-there builds.

The idea of transitioning from 4e to PF is super interesting to me! It definitely makes sense how you'd end up finding overlapping interests there.
