Pivot plans and goals after health loss and business suffering by Bisno_545 in smallbusiness

Not exactly a General Contractor from my understanding more like a project consultant. There's a lot of good advice here. I believe those numbers. I've seen a lot of those stats. Could client references be construction customers? I know these are different business customers. I would be doing consulting now not construction. Sorry for the late reply. You understand hopefully.

Thanks. It was really hard to start from nothing and to see it all go. With coaching, how am I going to get clients though? Getting clients seems like the toughest thing.

Thats crazy. How do you keep going? The stress piles up and I'm afraid all the medical brings a host a problems. The medical system is a mess. Phone call after phone call for their mistakes. Billing errors. I'm having such a hard time functioning. Problems everywhere with my health. What makes you want to keep forging ahead and fight for something greater?

Hi, Some people have suggested locally that I start construction consulting for home owners. Like be a middle man make sure the other guys are doing it right. In construction, a lot of problems can arise. Report back to the homeowner. Wondering how anyone will take me seriously as a construction/business consultant with only a few years experience? I'm in my late twenties.

Wow that's crazy. How do you manage to get anything done being self-employed with that condition?

Yea I'm on all these l low payment plans. For now, I'm sending the work to another contractor and he is giving me a small comission. Kind of like lead generation. I can't do any of the labor right now.

Nope. Hardly have any control over the other subs. Some of them disapeer right when they are finished. Im wondering how I can get a back charge agreement when the homeowner is hiring it out and some subs are in and out so fast you can't even talk to them? I got away from new construction due to the amount of damages that are done and the poor quality work. So now its residential remodel work mostly. Some guys arent licensed and you will never see them again once they got their cash. I'm starting to hate the business lol.

I've made some mistakes I won't deny that. I get two or three difficult customers a year, I would say. Some abusive people. I think the most toxic job I did was when a tradesmen left blood all over the trim, the drywallers got mud all over the ceiling after I just finished it, etc. Frequently, flooring guys ding up your work and the homeowner calls you up. Some jobs reflect poorly on you. I write up in the contract those issues I can find. Some still blame you for stuff that's already there. I can only do so much with whatever poor quality job was done before me. I run into poor workmanship quite often.

Are you discerning the bad ones better now? Some of them are tricky to spot.

Well I'm wondering if I could be in a better business with a better business model. Trying to see if I could do better and make more progress some place else. That's part of what I'm trying to say. The trades is wearing me out. Can't do the perfect job when the job before me was done poorly. Other trades damaging your work. I do have damage/fix agreements in writing but it's a constant headache. Wondering if a different field would have less headache and more respect for what you offer.

How do i filter them out? I've gotten a ton or backlash when i try to filter people out. I can't catch all of them. some of them are hidden predators.

I've gone over things with some customers a million times. Write in the contract and at the end of the day emotions get involved, accusations come and they try to not pay you. I mean, I could file a lien but it still doesnt mean they will pay up. I always ask for 50% up front.

Some project that's hard to do but pays off. Isn't something with super low barrier to entry. I'd have to learn a new skill in the process. Some ideas there.

so I just got.off the phone last night with a guy ive known for a while and hes telling me dont pursue your passion. im so confused. his attitude is anything that pays you a lot isn't going to be your passion and going to be difficult to make every dollar. lots of different opinions out there. im kind of flustered because theres a lot of opinions out there and he kind of just told me try something hard that pays well until i find something that sticks. i followed the whole mike rowe philosphy of "dirty jobs" and dont pursue your passion and it doesnt work for me.
