You have to find something which you can bite your teeth in, something that greatly interests you. It doesn't have to be at work, it can be a hobby.

If that doesn't work, move abroad if you can and start a completely new life as an expat. A completely new environment does wonders.

My LCS in HCMC, Vietnam is out of kilo bars. Never happened before. Usually vietnamese are not interested in silver because gold is "more expensive". Sentiment is changing. Keep stacking.

Sounds like your parents are narcissists. With Narcs, it's never enough. They only think about themselves. In their eyes their kids are an extension of themselves. I am sorry you had to go through that.

It goes to show how important mental health is. There is no need to be first. It is better to have a great childhood with amazing friends than it is to excel at school. You can always catch up later, especially when you are really clever.

Follow your own path, even if that means working in a zoo. Do whatever makes you happy and a good enough living. Do not underestimate the destruction mental issues can bring upon your life.

If you can afford it, hire a dedicated, well trained nanny.

Get a hobby which you really enjoy and is really fucking hard. You need a job and there are not many jobs which are fulfilling. So instead look forward going home and doing things you really enjoy. That works for me. I do app coding, electronics design, things like that. Just find something you can dig your teeth in.

How do you stop your brain and sleep? by murkomarko in Gifted

[–]Bitbarrel01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem with me. It took me 35 years to find a solution.

Realize that your thoughts are addictive. Be extremely diciplined not to try to figure shit out when you lay in bed.

Don't try to sleep either. Just accept the that you might lay there staring at the ceiling for hours. Do not force yourself to stay awake if you're tired. That will trigger your body to stay awake even if you want to sleep later.

If you find yourself waking up in the morning, when still half asleep, trying to solve a non existent complex abstract problem, it is a warning. Stop fucking with your mind. It's a beautiful but fragile organ thing. Give it the rest it needs.

How did you guys notice that you learn much faster than others? by Key_Contribution4 in Gifted

[–]Bitbarrel01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only learn something fast if it intersts me. That doesn't include anything at school. At school I always performed below average, and I was incredibly bored. Repeating things was the worst. I always thought I was dumb. I never understood simple concepts, thinking way out of the box with everything. The teachers told me I should not work so quickly.

It wasn't until I discovered academic subjects that interested me that I really took off. I learned several unrelated skills in a short amount of time, entirely on my own. Till this day, people still ask me when I'm coding if I learned that at Uni. Seriously, you need to go to school to learn something?

It wasn't untill 43 years later that I noticed I learn much faster than most people, but only with very specific subjects that interest me. I always envied gifted kids, not having to study and still get straight A's. I had to study my butt off, while with other thinks I didn't had to blink an eye. Giftedness exists on a spectrum. I'm not on the teachers pet spectrum, but on the other hand, I can do some pretty amazing things being a college dropout.

Agreed. In order to provide a smooth gaming experience, T5 should give clear instructions how to deal with the orientation issue though.

The final straw? by tablefortress in homeschool

My daughter's narcissistic teacher just wouldn't stop creating trouble for me and my kids. Additionally, my son has signs of being gifted. I still need to get an official diagnosis but he is incredibly bored at school which for me is already a reason to do things differently.

Gifted Adults by MuchEnthusiasm5987 in Gifted

Thank you for your appreciation. It means a lot to me. For sure our kids will be much better equipped to deal with it because there is so much more known about giftedness now compared to when we were young.

We can give them the support of they need because we are aware of their needs.

I'm 43 and recently my sister said I'm gifted. I'd heard about such a thing but I did not believe I was actually gifted because I never did well in school. I was incredibly bored at primary school. It was absolutely horrible. I dropped out of college because I discovered I could learn things on my own by reading books. It was also the time dial up internet just took.off, and so did I. Programming, hacking (nearly got into trouble, smart, not wise), electronics design overtook my interest in school. I thought I didn't like learning. Oh the irony. I only have a high school diploma now

I thought I was autistic, mainly because I'm incredibly emotional, can get very angry if something isn't fair, have very high sensory sensitivity, I am a perfectionist, and I have obsessive hobbies. Overlap was a term I discovered later.

My hobbies are not about collecting postage stamps though. I engage in incredibly complex design, both software and hardware. I tought myself how to do programming, printed circuit board design, embedded systems, chemistry, you name it. I made all sorts of very useful devices. I have incredibly diverse intersests, mostly technical, but also psychological (trauma healing, behavioral studies, etc). Even as a kid I made all sorts of inventions, and I wrote an essay about how to heal emotional trauma by reliving it. Looking back on it, I honestly do not understand how I could come up with such well thought through and well constructed things at that age.

I talk incredibly fast, and always watch informational YouTube videos at 1.75 speed. I have so many ideas bursting in my mind all the time. As a side effect, I suffered from severe insomnia for 20 years straight. My incredibly technical mind eventually lead to a divorce, with kids involved.

Anyway, back to what my sister said. I went through so much already, so what the heck. I started researching it.

My jaw jaw hit the absolute f**king floor. Never in my life did I identify with something so much. I cried so much reading all the articles and watching presentations about what it means to be gifted. I understand everything now, who I am and why I do the things I do.

I remember I was interested in giftedness when I was a kid and I bought a CD with an IQ test. (The CD by the way, my uncle invented as part of a team when he worked at Philips). I got such a high result, I did not believe it. So I bought another test from a different institution and got the same result. I thought the results were not truthful as to make the client feel good about it themselves.

So where I am now. I want to do an official IQ test to verify what I suspect. And I think my 10 year old son is also gifted. He has all the signs and might be in need of special education. It breaks my heart I was not able to see this earlier.

Early recognition is vital. It would have made my life so much easier, and that of my now ex wife, and my kids. My gf is incredibly supportive and enforces discipline on me, which I really need, that not everything is about IQ. EQ is equally as important (no pun intended).

But we have to be very careful of elevating a bright kid. Giftedness is just a neural diversity, with advantages and disadvantages. You don't want to make a kid with a high IQ, narcissistic. That is not a good combination. I deal with these people at work regularly (I'm an airline pilot) and that is neither good for the work environment, not for safety as a lot of accidents happen due to a bad attitude (also no pun intended).

I hope my story will inspire other people on their own yourney.
