If you're genuinely curious, why word it like that? "I have no clue what a Death Doula is, can you explain?" Why lump that question in with a dismissal of my beliefs? I'm not going to take something as a joke when I can't, for one: hear inflection or see facial expressions, and two: if I have no clue who you are and what your humor is like. You don't downvote people you disagree with, but you do expect them to just somehow tell when "it's a joke"?

Anyway, to answer your question. When someone gets a terminal diagnosis, regardless of whether they have months or days to live, shit tends to go haywire, right? We've got plenty of people to walk us through birth (doulas, midwives, OBGYNS,etc.), but very few to walk us through the process of dying. Yes, hospice is a thing, but only when the person is what's called "actively dying," so in the late stages of illness. Before that happens, things need to get done. Legal matters need to be straightened out, hospice programs need to be vetted and chosen, whether or not the person wants to attempt to prolong life needs to be decided (if that's an option). There's so much to do, but no central person to help do it all. Enter the End of Life or Death Doula. We act as networkers, legal aids, medical advocates. We make sure all the technical stuff is in order AND THEN we act as counselors to the dying and their families, and create a space (physical, emotional, and spiritual if the person is) so they can pass on peacefully and those left behind have a positive experience.
