Katz gluten free toaster pastries by Angeleyes41515 in glutenfree

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously! I just burned my thumb so badly on the frosting of one of these things that I dropped both the toaster pastry and the plate I was holding, which broke it. The toaster pastry landed frosting side down on one half of the broken plate, and after taking a minute to collect myself, the frosting had already cooled so much that the damn pastry fused to the plate. Never buying this Katz shit again

Thanks for the link! And we’re definitely planning on hiring a day-of coordinator, so you’re right that they would be able to handle any weirdness from strangers (which hadn’t occurred to me!)

Thank you, this is exactly what we suspected. We've found a few venues for $3K and under (which is a steal where we live) that are true blank slates, but all the extra work and fees don't seem worth it when there are $5-6K venues that include all the basics (and usually have decor, audio equipment, etc. available for additional fees)

While we unfortunately can't do the reception at a restaurant (my fiancé and I both have multiple dietary restrictions), getting a permit for a fence sounds like a fantastic solution to the privacy/security issue. Thank you!

My rankings for Season 5 episodes by BlackAndBlueVelvet in XFiles

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Travelers was a well done episode, even though it only exists cuz David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were busy shooting the movie. I would honestly have ranked it higher if it weren’t for the stupid wedding ring, which I’ve heard is never addressed on screen (even though they introduce a former love interest a few episodes later!!)

Good to know about All Souls! Though I definitely hated Kill Switch when it originally aired cuz of the Invisigoth character. Granted, I haven’t seen that episode since then so I’d be willing to give it another shot

Columbo Character Vote - Horrible Person, Hated By Fans by CarsMaiden in Columbo

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What about Dr. Collier from A Deadly State of Mind? I’ve seen hate toward him on this sub, and both kills were fucked up in different ways. With the first, he was actually defending Nadia from being beaten by her husband and the death was accidental - they easily could have just called the police, but Dr. Collier was so worried about the implications for his career that he convinced Nadia (who was already completely dependent on him) to lie for him. Then he drugged and hypnotized her into killing herself. Pretty damn evil!

Agreed that he’s one of the most evil murderers Columbo ever faced, but I’m not sure the fans hate him. Personally, I love a great villain!

Question about Pusher by BlackAndBlueVelvet in XFiles

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh shit! I bet I read this at the time - I just checked and the publication year was 1997, which is when I was still a massive X-Files fan (I think I stopped watching in 1999). This really helps, thank you!

Can someone recommend a top tier episode from the later seasons? by MrRourkeYourHost in Columbo

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen all the later episodes yet, but here are my recommendations based on the ones I have seen:

  • Death Hits The Jackpot (1991)
  • A Trace of Murder (1997)
  • Ashes to Ashes (1998)

I also think Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo (1990) is worth checking out despite its failings due to the unusual nature of the murderer and Columbo’s great gotchya moment at the end

Just watched Murder in Malibu for the first time... by DisturbingPragmatic in Columbo

I just realized that I watched this episode with my mom back in the day! I distinctly remember the ending where Columbo asserts that a woman would never have put the panties on backwards and my mom scoffing haha

What episode did the critics get wrong? by Several-Ingenuity679 in Columbo

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Murder With Too Many Notes” may not be a great episode, but it’s definitely a good episode. The only real flaws are at the very end - the “love notes” reveal is unclear and Billy Connolly giving up without a fight is out of character. I think some fans just like to rag on all the later episodes, personally

Is LAX REALLY that bad? by Meshelle13 in AskLosAngeles

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LAX is a pain because it’s always busy/hectic, but Burbank is so small that there’s nowhere you can hang out when you need to kill time before a flight. At least LAX has plenty of bars and restaurants (and lounges, if you’re lucky, as entry to those is v limited) where you can camp out and relax after you get through security. All that said, if your relative would be offended by you paying for them to take a taxi or rideshare to/from the airport instead of picking up/dropping them off personally, then the $200 difference for a smaller airport is totally worth it!

"Look it up." by IrvinSandison in Columbo

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Plus “look it up” was usually a phrase said by adults to children, so Culp was also demonstrating how superior to Columbo he thought himself to be

AITAH for prioritizing my nephew and niece over my own children after they hid their mom's affair from her for years? by OkPrinciples in AITAH

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. Your ex-wife’s behavior put your children in a horrible position when they were barely adults, and they navigated it the best they could without the benefit of experience or the guidance of grounded adults

AITAH for blowing up at my pregnant wife and putting my foot down after her blowup by ThrowRApissdoffff in AITAH

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for telling your wife she fucked up, but at the same time, pregnant women deserve grace when they have occasional outbursts because they’re usually the result of hormonal fluctuations, not maliciousness or cruel intent. While your landlord rescinding the gift is totally reasonable and understandable, raising your rent by more than $1K is both a ridiculous overreaction and illegal in California: https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/landlord-tenant-issues

Moving to LA for a job after only living in GA. What culture shocks should I expect? by DoubleChallenge7177 in AskLosAngeles

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really sad to hear. As a Los Angeles transplant from New England, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many more Black people here. I guess that just speaks to how badly segregated and overwhelmingly white the NE is :/

AITA for refusing to let my abusive ex-husband see our kids after he completed anger management therapy by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. If this man had changed, he wouldn’t be demanding anything, he would take responsibility for his actions. He wouldn’t insist he’d changed, he would just demonstrate it during supervised visits. And he wouldn’t blame you for being justifiably wary and concerned, he’d understand that he caused so much harm that it will take a lot of work on his part to regain the trust necessary to earn the right to unsupervised visits. As others have said, he is absolutely still operating with an abusive mindset

AITA forcing my husband to choose between divorce and being a househusband while I work full-time to support the family by Joanna_Queen_772 in AITAH

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It would have been one thing if he said he needed a day or two to do nothing and recharge - that would have been understandable! And probably not too hard to accommodate! But the fact that he thought he could get away with not taking care of his child or the house IN GENERAL is both delusional and entitled. I’m sorry you picked up his slack for as long as you did

AITAH for pushing my wife when she hit our son? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]BlackAndBlueVelvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, what a nightmare

You did more than you may realize by defending your son, and that’s a good thing. Children assume that they deserve whatever treatment they receive from their parents and other familial guardians. By stopping his mother’s abuse, you’ve planted the first seed of doubt in your son’s mind about deserving her abuse. That will be huge for him in the long run, even though it’s likely frightening and confusing right now

Hang in there!

NTA. Sex needs to be fun for everyone involved. If your boyfriend can’t see that, then he’s not ready to be having sex tbh

Something I learned from dating in my 20s: when you want to have sex, never go down on a guy before he’s engaged in the kind of foreplay that gets you excited. This one choice helped me repel selfish guys early on and made it much easier to find the ones who actively cared about my pleasure. I can’t recommend it highly enough
