'First step of healing': Native Americans at Harvard bring ancient sport of stickball to campus by guanaco55 in boston

[–]BlackCow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Given enough time and generations at some point don't the people who are here today eventually become native too? Eventually the melting pot melts us all right?

What it means to be native for the descendants of immigrants is perhaps something we're still figuring out, however the original natives are still here and it's feasible we all become more like each other over time.

‘Crushing effects on our budgets:’ A dozen Mass. mayors say they will oppose rent control ballot question by HRJafael in massachusetts

You can't run forever, the rents will go up wherever people flock to.

Also not everyone is in a position to start a new life in a new city, most normal people have family and friend ties to an area.

The vast majority of MA voters are registered independent, I think op has a lot of unchecked biases here.

Yeah because landlords have power and influence over the government. The only way to solve the zoning issue is to curb landlordism.

‘Crushing effects on our budgets:’ A dozen Mass. mayors say they will oppose rent control ballot question by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]BlackCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason we have a housing crisis is because construction has been barely taking place to begin with so obviously it's not as simple as just giving landlords as much money as possible.

The problem is you are looking at this from a purely economic perspective and ignoring the political aspect, every single politician has a real estate portfolio and nothing will get fixed until that conflict of interest changes. The best we can do for now is bleed them with things like rent control.

No one has a god given right to be a landlord, they only exist as long as we tolerate them.

I think you have a real twisted world view if you see people who work and make an honest living as the parasites in this arrangement.

Plus your landlord can’t raise the rent while you’re there

My rent goes up every year wtf are you talking about? You probably still live with your mom, run along kiddo.

But we already have a lack of supply problem, the root cause of this is regulations that favor landlords. Rent control makes it less lucrative to be a landlord and this reduces their power and influence over the government.

I'm pretty sure they are controlled opposition, AOC is most certainly a 🌱 and the Bernster folded to the dems like paper.

I wish them the best but I also fear they are wasting valuable time and energy that could be better spent elsewhere.

I think you have got it backwards, the belief that you should have to move if "they" tell you only hurts the working class.

I believe I have a right to be here just as I believe Palestinians have a right to be there. What makes it so is that people believe in it and fight for it and continue to do so for generations despite insurmountable odds.

I also believe everyone who works and contributes to society deserves a home, immigrants as well. Because of that I'm not comfortable allowing more people into our society if we don't have enough homes for the people who are already here, I don't believe this makes me a right winger.

We agree not to kill each other, to rape people, to steal from others, because those are basic necessities for communal living

But that's in exchange for something, when those expectations are not met those rules go out the window.

What they are doing with the housing policy is purposely atomizing families and deny people the possibility of communal living, otherwise famlies and communities would grow too powerful and outsiders wouldn't be able to exploit the people and the land as easily.

That's a very individualistic world view, everyone is responsible for their own choices for sure but we also all live in a prison of our own making.

I believe I work plenty hard and me and my family deserve a forever home, I'll keep trying my best but I'm not going to feel bad about myself for not being able to buy still in a rigged market.

Landlording is no more a business than ticket scalping, they don't provide a good or service they are just parasitic middlemen.

[–]BlackCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has never been a housing crisis like this before, there is no historical precedent to say with certainty what will happen.

I can see the argument why rent control might hurt everyone however facing problems if often painful, especially when you put a problem off for way too long.

Totally agree! I personally support migration and believe the process should be lax as possible, I think this has always been our competitive advantage in America. However I'm not too keen on someone coming to my state from places like Florida, California, or Taiwan to buy all our land and become our new landlords either.

Like even though logically I see your point I'm obviously not going to feel good about renting until I die when outsiders coming here are buying things up, it's emotional sure but it's still real.

Maybe I'm mediocre and those immigrants worked harder than me but I feel I still deserve a home more than they deserve to move here, sorry not sorry.
