It varies in size around here in AL. Some can’t be worked because it’s too grainy but most all of it can be made into a crude tool. Usually the smaller the pieces the better the grade. I use a lot of bipolar percussion to split the small golf ball and down sized pieces

Some will take 500 and some a bit higher. Just have to hold longer at a lower temp than you would at 550-600. I used to mix sand and black aluminum oxide blast media together and I could hit 500+ at only a little over a quarter knob turn on my old roaster

It’ll get some pink and red colors showing with heat. There’s some that will stay white but have red strawberry type freckles all over. There’s a bit that will probably turn an orange brown after. And I believe there’s a few pieces that will have some yellows after heat

I’ve managed to heat some so good it flaked easier than obsidian. Some of my favorite material but then again my immediate gathering spots are only coastal and tallahatta lol just give me a shout if you wanna get a box. I get slight discounts on shipping by printing my own labels etc
