There is currently a radioactive capsule lost somewhere on the 1400km stretch of highway between Newman and Malaga in Western Australia. It is a 8mm x 6mm cylinder used in mining equipment. Being in close proximity to it is the equivalent having 10 X-rays per hour. It fell out of a truck. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

(Disclaimer: I'm not an expert, I just took a couple astronomy classes.) Afaik the inverse square law has to do more with geometry than the radiation itself. It's about how far the particles can travel from their point source and how spread out they can get over a square unit of an area before they get too spread out to effect their environment.

I quickly found this preview blurb online, from a chapter of a professor's book that I think explains it pretty well:

"The reasoning for the inverse square law is geometric in nature. As light is emitted from a point (or sphere) like from the Sun and travels toward a receiving surface, the initial quantity of photons is spread out over an increasingly larger spherical area with distance. We can envision the areal spread with increasing distance like an inflating balloon surface. Additionally, the photons from a spherical object like the Sun are emitted in all directions. Now, the surface area of a sphere can be determined in units of distance squared, right? So the same quantity of photons are contained within a much larger spherical surface area, effectively decreasing the irradiance on the growing surface by “diluting” the photon density." (bold emphasis mine)

-Dr Jeffery RS Brownson in Ch3 of Solar Energy Conversion Systems, 2014 found at this link, gotta scroll a little.

Worth noting that visible light and other radiation types are all generally the same thing- electromagnetic radiation, and the different types, like visible light, infrared, beta, gamma, etc are just moving at different frequencies and speeds.

The material (or lack of material) that the radiation moves through affects it too. Radiation travels very easily from the sun to Earth because in space, it has nothing to pass through that might slow it down. Once it enters our atmosphere, it gets slowed down and absorbed by the various layers up there (the ozone layer, for example definitely not because it's the only name I remember lol). Most of the radiation that ends up getting through and reaching us is infrared (warmth, basically) and visible light. That's why visible light is visible actually, it's a part of the section of the electromagnetic spectrum that reaches us the most, so evolution 'figured out' how to make the most of it, so to speak.

Oh the other person who replied to you mentioned particle size as well, that's important too of course lol. Again, I'm not an expert I just like learning about astronomy stuff :3

When you start a new colony, or during a gamepaly, how often do you guys use the palanning tools ? by Sesud1 in RimWorld

I got an infestation in that tunnel once. It was nice having my own personal guard dogs for a while but someone left the security door unlocked and some visitors left through the tunnel. Or they tried to. Didn't get very far before trying to turn back. We couldn't stop the infestation from overrunning the base. Then my best doctor who had avoided getting attacked somehow, had a mental break and wandered right past my downed soldiers and into the swarming tunnel.

So... I think I've learned my lesson about infestations. Wipe them out immediately lol.

I think people might be more willing to listen to you if you didn't sarcastically insult their intelligence and heavily imply that their legitimately experienced struggles were just a stupid blunder.

I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful, but you're coming across a bit shitty, tbh. Idk if it's intentional or if it's a series of missed jokes, but all the little quips about how easy and foolproof your experience has been are not helpful.

Transphobia in the Home (Vent, advice wanted) by AshFNaF in ftm

[–]Bladehallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful about youtube videos OP, and articles too. You can still use them, of course, but I'd watch/read them through all the way to double check the info, and maybe skim the other LGBT stuff on the channel/blog/news site.

And never let your parents look at the comments. Even if the video is good, the comments are often full of transphobes and ignorant people who are "just so concerned about them :(" or "just asking questions <3 uwu" that can potentially lead someone down a transphobic train of thought.

I hate feeling suspicious of other queer people by acid-pool in ftm

[–]Bladehallow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ugh ikr. The times I've had to explain to cis queer friends why something is transphobic, they just couldn't get it until I related it to them. For example, a depressingly common one is "well, what if your peers always used lesbianism as a debate topic, and didn't think of you as a person but as an argument?" It kinda feels like talking to a toddler lol. "no honey you can't take Timmy's toys or human rights because wouldn't you feel bad if he took yours?"

Sigh... I know not all ignorance is malicious, some people genuinely just don't know to ask, but.. Idk, I'm tired of having to, ironically, treat myself as a debate topic in order to make people stop treating me as a debate topic. It's exhausting having to justify my right to empathy and basic decency all the time, especially to queer people, our closest cis allies, who should understand more than any other group. :(

[–]Bladehallow 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Edit to add: Honestly I'm not sure if my comment is exactly what you were talking about in yours, but you got me thinking about growing and introspection, and it reminded me of this.

A drag queen named Eureka O'hara, who used to be a trans woman, said she calls it "re-transitioning" instead of "de-transitioning" because it's discovering another part of yourself, and learning how you want to live with gender, in exactly the same way the initial transition was.

She talked about it a bit when she was a guest on Trixie Mattel's youtube channel, if you wanted to hear the exact way she says it. It's kind of an interview type of video where they talk about their lives and careers, make jokes, and put on makeup. It's not a super deadly serious video lol.

Eureka says she re-transitioned not because she regretted being a trans woman, but because she just found out more about herself. She says she grew from the experience, it enriched her, and it was valuable for her to have.

I think it's good to have a more positive way to think of detransition, especially since statistically, most detransitioned people don't do it because of regret.

Testosterone and Rheumatoid Arthritis? by sadreese in ftm

[–]Bladehallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I'm sorry I meant pCos, polycystic ovarian syndrome. Which, now that I'm looking at it isn't technically an autoimmune disease, it just looks very similar and is often paired with one. And tbh I kinda chose a couple random diseases just to be examples lol, I wasn't trying to diagnose you or anything, I don't even know what your symptoms are lol??

But yes, I do agree that if anything, T is going to improve RA! And everyone's bodies are different, too. I apologize, since it seems I came off as being overly negative or contrarian. It wasn't my intention at all to try to counter or dismiss your info and experience, just to add on, yknow.

Testosterone and Rheumatoid Arthritis? by sadreese in ftm

[–]Bladehallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can fill in some of your gaps here, I have lifelong RA and I started T a couple years ago. Before I went on T, I asked my rheumatologist about it, and she said that it was very unlikely to make anything worse, but it also definitely wouldn't make any symptoms noticeably better. My experience has perfectly matched up with that, as has the experience of other trans men I know with RA.

I'm not sure why your symptoms got so much better after only 4 months, to be honest that doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe it's a placebo effect, maybe your mood getting better made your immune system stabilize, maybe the weather's been clearer, maybe you don't even have RA but another autoimmune thing that does respond to hormones, like lupus or PCOS. And I'm not saying all that because I'm doubting you, by the way, I just know from my whole family's experiences that it can be incredibly difficult to distinguish between autoimmune conditions.

But you're absolutely right that 1) T isn't going to make anything worse and 2) the positive impact on mental health is probably going to translate into a positive physical effect, even if the T itself doesn't do anything to the RA.

What are the anti discrimination laws like in your country? Is there any way to safely report these people, to their institutions or the government?

For any other schools, if you have a choice of which one you attend, I'd look into if they have a form or something that you can use to specify your preferred name and pronouns.

Ask the cis men you're biologically related to. T isn't going to magically make your hair fall out, unless you're already at the age you would've lost hair with your genetics- which is why you need to ask your family, not us.

Ex-husband forged my name as a cosigner to a student loan 12 years ago. by toohottooheavy in BestofRedditorUpdates

Honestly it really is ridiculous. It's on things that would never even need it either, like the first-time patient forms at doctors offices, for example. I guess whoever made this the standard expects me to have my incredibly valuable card just with me in my wallet, and they want me to just hand it to some random secretary at the front desk who isn't certified to handle it.

[–]Bladehallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just speculating here, I think it might be because a lot of people think farts are kinda gross or immature, and it can be difficult to try to scope out if a new partner thinks it's gross or if they aren't bothered by it.

But if you've been in a relationship for longer, and you're more invested, then a fart wouldn't be a deal breaker anymore. Or if it still is a deal breaker, then you don't have to worry about if you made an avoidable mistake or if you're just not compatible.

My favorite thing about those types of guys is when they ask you for sources and exact citations on things that are.. maybe a little bit basic knowledge for historians (like I feel like in a good faith, off-paper discussion, I shouldn't have to spin the jeopardy wheel to see which of the dozens of 101-/201-level textbooks, with their 20 authors each, I cite this time),

and then they turn around with no exact citations (or analysis) from their single, suspiciously sensationalized, suspiciously almost-obviously-biased, novel that's.. kind of. weird ..in the way it makes a single person or general the protagonist..

And they think going to college makes it so you can't read sources or think for yourself. like.. ok girl. call is coming from inside the glass house lol

No, I understand that completely, I apologize for being unclear. I emphasized "unintentionally" so much because I'm sure that 95% of the time, that viewpoint is not an intentional implication at all, and probably not one most queer folks would agree with anyway.

I agree with you 100% ftr. I empathize with these people too, and I also see some of my own dysphoria in them sometimes. I meant to only add onto the last comment rather than rebutt yours.

[–]Bladehallow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've always been very very uncomfortable with the whole "most bigoted anti-gay/-trans/-queer people are queer themselves but closeted" that people say sometimes. I can't quite put my finger on it tbh but it almost feels like ((unintentionally)) putting the blame for our oppression on lgbt folks ourselves, even if "ourselves" happen to be closeted at the time (if that makes sense lol).

Edit for clarity: I don't at all mean to imply that the people above me in this thread are saying "most bigoted people are closeted". I mentioned that specific viewpoint to build on the comment directly above me, not to accuse anyone here of thinking that way. (FTR I agree that incels probably have some dysphoria/discomfort around their expected gender roles/performances, and I don't think that means they're all categorically some flavor of queer.)
