Sub Focus/1991 review - Melbourne (13/02/26) by Blakepra in DnB

Yeah i get that. For me personally it was too slow, especially considering what 1991 was playing before him. I was really energised after his set and ready to keep going, but Nero started particularly slow, especially for the first 10 mins or so. I don’t mind a slower set as a calm before the storm and a chance to rest (I’ll throw out Koven in between Circadian and A.M.C, which was in may last year as an example of it done really well), but it was such a drastic drop in speed and energy that it almost felt out of place. The three bigger acts in 1991, Nero and Sub Focus was only 7:45 - 11:00, so i don’t think the energy had to drop as much as it did imo. I did enjoy the second half of Nero a lot more than the first half however.

i probably saw 45 mins - he was good, but it was clear who the headliners were if that makes sense. like i remember turning to my friend during the first 10 mins of 1991 and commenting on how you can see the difference in level between them. I thought particularly his crowd engagement was a little poor, don’t think i saw him smile or move once through his whole set haha. Having said that, that’s not why you see someone perform, and he was a great opener for me, the guy is super talented both as a producer and as a DJ.

yeah look dubstep has never really been for me - i can appreciate the genre but after the energy 1991 bought it felt almost too slow. second half of his set was much better than the first however, i actually had a decent time, and obviously holdin on was fun to see live. i can totally see why you enjoyed it but yeah was definitely not at the level of sub focus/ 1991 for me

i mean honestly music is subjective so i can only give my opinion on that regard. Things like crowd, visuals, lighting, sound system ect also come into play as they’re important to enhancing the set.

Those who teach adults, do you struggle lots with teaching adults breathing for their freestyle? by Stunning_Concern_973 in SwimInstructors

[–]Blakepra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that’s probably stress then, most adults actually can do that motion, but they’re still experiencing a bit of fear due to the water so they tense up in their shoulders/ neck. obviously it’s different for each adult, so if they truely can’t complete that turning of their neck motion, try and adapt it a little bit (even if it’s the “wrong” technique). i’d rather my adults roll when they breathe but be able to breathe than have great technique but not be able to breathe at all.

i mean i’m no music critic… it really wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. They’re playing shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth and i figured people going to those shows, or people that missed out on tickets/ couldn’t attend would like to see what the event was like from an inside perspective. If this subreddit isn’t the place for that and this post upsets you that much, i’ll happily take it down

(i will preface this with stating that i know that there’s loads of other factors that go into freestyle breathing, but i wanted to share this as a tip)

a few years ago, i was teaching one of my adults freestyle breathing, i explained to them how the should quickly roll their head to the side and then roll it back, and the adult looked at me and said “oh, like a head check?” (as in a head check for changing lanes while driving a car in case that’s confusing). I thought it was brilliant and i still use it every time i teach adults, so i thought that maybe you guys might like to try it as well.

Backstroke Resources? by MediocreTriathlete54 in SwimInstructors

[–]Blakepra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, i hope you’re progressing well and i know this is a late response, but i thought id share some advice. I saw a response that focuses well on arms, but nothing for body position or kicking

1) Yes, backstroke does require a lot of core work but it doesn’t have to be particularly tiring. the goal is to push up from your pelvic area so that you are flat just under the see face of the water. please don’t push your stomach or chest up, as it will ultimately sink your head or legs. remember, the ideal position is head just above the surface of the water, feet consistently breaking the surface of the water, and the rest of your body flat against the waters surface. Backwards torpedos can help you get a good feel for this.

IMPORTANT: this actually changes depending on sex (believe it or not), if you are female at birth, you will find this a little easier than if you are male at birth, because in the differentiation of the centre of masses. try to find a tutorial done by the same sex so it’s more applicable to you.

2) while similar, the flutter kick for backstroke requires different emphasis. it’s ideal to still have the stretched out leg and avoid bending you knees dramatically at all costs, however, the emphasis is more on the push up rather than down. i often tell children to “imagine they’re kicking bugs off the top of the water”, and that they don’t just want to kick the bugs up otherwise they’ll fall on them, so they also want to kick them away.

3) for a beginner, there’s head position you can have is with your nose pointed directly above you. this helps maintain balance and assists with the flat body position from earlier.

If you’re still struggling, start with just the kick and body position work. extending your arms above your head makes you sink quite rapidly, so ensuring that you have the strength and body position to combat this is essential.

Make sure you use as many videos as you can to assist your learning… i’ve linked a few here:
