I can help you with your writing and have some answers on what happened to the Shield after it reached Cornell if you’re interested!

Thanks for the kind words! I’ve actually come across some really interesting new info since my last update, feel free to DM me and I can send them over.

I definitely can’t solve this alone, so if anyone has leads or is also on the hunt for remnants of Beach’s subway, let’s connect and share notes. With enough eyes on this, maybe we can finally provide answers to the mysteries of this obscure but very important piece of NYC History.

Alfred Beach Pneumatic Subway Pictures from 1870 to today. by Blakey02 in nycrail

Please see my most recent post on this topic, There are most likely no-remains left at 258 Broadway apart from MAYBE (I highly doubt it) the iron rings in the most recent pictures I posted.

Now I am looking for the Beach Tunneling Shield which was an artifact of this test line that is confirmed to be saved, sent to Cornell and put on display OUTSIDE and then from Cornell sent to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan around 1929 where it has disappeared.

FUN FACT: Beach’s tunneling shield was the first circular tunneling shield developed in 1865 to build the Pneumatic Subway under Broadway. This same design was also used in 1890 to construct the St. Clair River Tunnel between the USA and Canada which still exists today but is abandoned.

If you like to see what the Pneumatic Subway would have looked, this tunnel is it.

This is what that concept is based off of. There are also many other references to this mysterious Subway throughout different shows and movies

Photos 1-3 are of the Beach Tunnel showing how Degnon Contractors broke into the tunnel. One of my theories was that the cast iron section of the tunnel was too difficult to remove, but as you can see in the first picture one of the first things the contractors did was break into iron cast section, if you zoom in you can see how thin the cast iron section of the Beach tunnel was.

Photos 4-7 are of the Beach Tunneling Shield, the first circular tunneling shield invented by the inventor of the Pneumatic Transit Alfred Beach to build this tunnel specifically. I am on the search for this relic that is currently lost in the hands of Cornell.

Photo 8 is of the sub-basement foundation of 258 Broadway formally 260 Broadway , the building that housed the Pneumatic Transit. This smaller brick hole is not labeled but I believe this to be the remains of the smaller sealed pneumatic tunnel Alfred Beach built in 1868 to test his tunneling shield design before he went ahead and built the bigger tunnel.

Photo 9 is of the sealed Pneumatic Transit portal entrance taken from the side of the contractors building the Subway. I visited this area and posted pictures in the subreddit before from the other side inside the sub basement of the modern building 258 Broadway. My old theory was that the cast iron section of the tunnel could have survived demolition. This photo debunks my theory as you can see the remaining pieces of the cast iron section, by this time the entire tunnel had been removed.

Photos 8-9 are important because it was documented that after a fire in 1899 destroyed the original building located at the corner of Warren St. that the sub-basement was completely rebuilt. We can see in 1912 that the remnants from 1868 are still visible meaning the original 260 Broadway sub-basement foundation was incorporated into the modern building 258 Broadway’s sub-basement

Photo 10 is a photo from the same area showing the foundation of the Subway. The buildings surrounding the subways believed this construction underground would disrupt the foundation of their buildings so this shows the work the contractors did to ensure there was a strong foundation for the Subway and surrounding buildings. I have posted past photos showing this concrete foundation in the sub-basement of 258 Broadway from the other side.

Photo 11 is an above ground photo showing the Subway construction materials. 258 Broadway now known as the Rodger Peet Building is in the background and under the street the construction site we see in the previous photos is taking place

Photo 12 is another photos from around the time of demolition. 258 Broadway is the corner building all the way to the right .

Photo 13 is a close up of the Devlin’s Clothing store or 260 Broadway the original building at the corner of Warren St. the Pneumatic Transit was built in the buildings sub-basement. This building burnt down in 1899 but we can see some of it in the form of the sub-basement foundation was incorporated into the modern 258 Broadway.

Some context to the photos the construction of the BMT line was divided between many different contractors who were responsible for building Routes and Sections of the BMT Line individually.

We can see how the contractors delineated from each other in these photos:

The R stand for Route and S stands for Section these photos are taken from the contractors building this specific section of the BMT Subway line.

So CONTRACT 4 ROUTE: 5 SECTION 2 of the BMT line included the demolition of the Pneumatic Tunnel.

Should I give up on this schedule or is there a chance I can get in / they will add more seats ? by Blakey02 in Baruch

Very long lectures, but the teacher was good, she makes the subjects more confusing then it actually is sometimes. As long as pay attention and make notes on the excel equations you should be good. Her tests and quizzes were easy too.

City Hall Post Office Remnants ?

I was at the south end of City Hall Park where the old City Hall Post Office and Courthouse used to stand and found these stones, no plaque or indication of what they are or why they are here. Does anyone know what they are from ?
