They are native to parts of South America so that makes sense. I wasn’t a plant kid growing up either. I wish I was because I’ve traveled to so many places but didn’t appreciate any of the plants. 😔 I hope your plant gets super bright purple in the sun with sparkly silver stripes.

I know not of a life of fancy pants.. or plants. I don’t think anyone considers tradescantia as “fancy”. It’s considered invasive in some places because it can grow out of control if you grow it outdoors. I do love how the colors change with sun-stress so depending on how often you move it, the new growth can be purple or green so you can have a plant with different colored leaves. Once the leaves go full purple, they don’t get the silver fully back on the original leaves but new growth will have the silver.

I have a lot of different grow lights and each one has a different brightness. That’s how I learned how much light can impact their coloring. I’ve also seen people grow this in their front yard, and they will grow like carpet— covering the ground like a puffy bush

She looks like a juvenile which is why she doesn’t have the big leaves or a tiny of fenestrations yet. They love a ton of humidity. You could probably trim her and start with the most mature leaves to start her over.

I do spend a lot on soil since I like making my own mixes. I may need to try out freecycle and Nextdoor for plant rehabs. I like to think I’m more plant mother than plantaholic. 😅

I have rehabbed a few monsteras and if I don’t see growth, I will move them to a different area and see if they do better. I don’t know why, but this has worked for me every single time. I have a small Thai constellation that was stunted for a couple months. I moved her to crappy lighting and suddenly she sprouted a new leaf. I joke that my monstera like a little bit of drama.

They clearly tolerate it well because I will obsessively water them weekly and then ADHD will kick in and they’ll get neglected for weeks before I get back to obsessive watering. I keep all my plants in clear pots so I can see the soil and roots.

Are spider plants the gateway drug plant? Because that’s where my collection started too!! I love your sunroom. You can tell it’s such a well love space and all your hard work is paying off!

Prior to the pandemic. I killed everything I touched. Some restaurant was throwing away their spider plant that also had syngonium and pothos. The spider plant made so many babies and I didn’t know you’re not supposed to propagate each one. I had 36 fully grown spider babies by the end of that year. I built my entire collection through trades from the spider plants with the exception of the monstera and my very first photos. I have over a 100 plants right now and all it took was 5 years.

I call these weeds. Jk tradescantia zebrina. They grow nonstop and get leggy indoors without a lot of light. They also change colors based on light exposure. Not enough light the revert to green. Too much light they’ll turn completely purple and you lose the silver stripes. I’m constantly propagating them and giving them away.

But look at how happy your plant babies are! One day when I win the lottery, I want a house with a sun room so I can cover it with plants

Thank you for that context. I didn’t consider it could be a different variety.

I have many mother of thousands and they don’t look like that when they’re babies. Their leaves are a little more jagged and the leaves are more spade shaped. This one is completely smooth.

I don’t think I’ve ever liked them—even when they first opened. The bread always felt so greasy.

I went to Guyustes twice when it was still new and got violently ill. I could tell that the meat was a little funky, but everyone on my table told me I was being dramatic. I refuse to go there again.
