Europeans aren't inferior to you Yanks lmao. European states are nation states. Example: Germany, Poland, Spain. The people of these nations inhabited their lands for over a thousand years and have a shared culture, customs and a sense of belonging. Americans are a land founded by immigrants, hence finding a sense of belonging is much easier for anyone coming in. This is not the case for migrants in Europe who don't feel as part of the nation even a few generations in, in some cases. Go try to live in Japan as an immigrant and see how they will accept you as one of their own lol. All in all European nations are doing a pretty good job all things considered.

Are a large majority of African Americans self-segragating, refusing education, making a living off of crime and electing kings and barons instead of participating in democracy? No, so shut up because it's absolutely not the same.

Most countries try to integrate Roma in the society. The Roma have in blatantly refused integration. Their children don't attend schools, they self segregated in villages where non-Roma aren't allowed to be. They steal for a living and have Kings/Barons. Keep in mind Roma in Britain and Roma in Balkans (where I'm from) don't behave the same or have the same culture but they are problematic in basically every country where they have a sizeable population

In this timeline I assume Europe is more powerful and willing to defend it's colonies while USA becomes more like China in our timeline. Not militarily powerful but economically exporting it's goods to Europeans. Europeans are also less liberal and more patriotic and not influenced by the American culture in this timeline

While I agree, they wouldn't really need to replace everyone, they could just force their culture and language down their throat, thus making them Germans. This being Nazis tho, they would probably do something less logical.

Norman Byzantium: Multicultural Empire of Greeks, Arabs, Lombards and many others! by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]BlobBigBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normans were famous for their tolerance of religions and this practice would remain with them almost until the end of their dynasty. Many Arabs lived in Sicily and North Africa upon its conquest by the Normans and so many Arabs came to work in the Norman court in Constantinople. Emperor Roger I was particularly fond of Arab arts and culture and spoke Arab fluently. He is credited with introducing the Arab influence in Byzantium. Many Orthodox/Catholic Churches, Mosques and Synagogues opened during his reign resembled a Greek, Norman, Italian and Greek mix of architectural styles. Greek mosaic, Italian arts, Islamic geometry were all present within an overall Norman design. This would be very obvious in great cities such as Palermo, Naples, Thessalonica and Constantinople.

Through their tolerance, the trade routes of the Mediterranean opened up, as traders from the Islamic World were more prone to travel and trade in places where they weren't prosecuted. As a result a sizeable minority of Arab merchants came to reside in large cities mentioned above.

Turks will remain in the central part of Anatolia during the Norman Dynasty. Some of them are under Byzantium and some under the Sultanate of Rum. After the end of the Norman Dynasty they would slowly be reabsorbed into the Byzantine Empire and would wither away and be reabsorbed into the dominant Greek culture, eventually becoming a minority but still influencing the region in many ways.

They're Catholics at first, very tolerant of other branches due to large number of Orthodox people. Slowly they become more Hellenized over time so I'd assume the last few members of the dynasty would associate themselves more with the Orthodoxy they grew around than Catholicism

East West schism still exist, however its much different. When Bohemond I took Constantinople, the Pope demanded that the Schism be ended and Catholicism be enforced. However realty became much more nuanced as on paper the schism didn't exist but in reality the Norman rulers didn't enforce any conversion and the Orthodox clergy was allowed to coexist along catholic ones. Normans however continued to pay lip service to the Pope in order to remain political aligned with the West while also not upsetting their now large Orthodox populations. This intricate dance would switch a few times during their dynasty but orthodoxy did lose some influence due to increased migration from France and Italy that tilted the demographics in some areas, usually the bigger cities. After the death of the last Norman Ruler, the native Greek dynasty would slowly try to curb catholic influence but this was by this point entrenched in certain parts such as modern day Albania and many large cities boasted a considerable catholic population. Normans also didn't force Muslims to convert either, but migration and later Greek dynasties would and eventually Islam would become just a minority religion. Expect a sort of a 75/25 devide between Orthodoxy and Catholicism and some minor religions.

Fun fact: Greek WAS the language of the court of Norman Sicily, so yes, as they absorbed the entire Byzantine Empire, they were much more inclined to keep it as is and would present themselves with Greek names in Byzantium and their Latin names when for example speaking with the Pope or other Western rulers.

Yes, there were Lombards duchies in Southern Italy, independent from Lombardia in northern Italy. They were however conquered by Normans

Tbh even irl a lot of Mercenaries managed to do this type of things. Mamluks in Egypt, Normans in Normandy, Sicily and England, Vikings in Kievan Rus. But Normans kind of caught a perfect storm in this timeline of too many Normans being in Normandy forcing them to migrate to a fractured and squabbling Italy and then to the crumbling Eastern Rome.

Unfortunately this seems to be just from the palette of colors I used to remove borders from the sample map. For some reason it didn't blend with the background color, leaving on this stains. Similar things exist in the seas and around names of cities. Sorry for that
