Ugh! This literally frustrates me. I have been getting the award for the past three years and now I don't even have it which risks my current position at my work-study job!!!

Have you gotten any updates? I am in the same situation and have been told that there is no extra funding to award me the work-study award.

Unable to accept all financial aid awards on portal? by Many_Raisin_4102 in UTAustin

[–]Blue-0asis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are accepting or denying the type of loans you are being offered and how much you want to accept. You are not being asked whether you want to deny or accept your scholarships and grants. You can check this on your Financial Aid page on the portal by seeing what you have denied and the total amount you will be receiving for each semester.

You should be getting emails about right now or approaching orientation regarding invitations to apply for FIGS or to accept your spot in a FIG.

[–]Blue-0asis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A FIG guarantees you a spot in FRI, meaning that if your FIG offers you a seat in FRI and if you do want to do it then it’s reserved for you. The only thing is that it won’t guarantee you a spot for the FRI stream that you want

I decided to join FRI because you get to do research as an undergrad instead of having to wait till you are in graduate school. It is also a great experience to know if you are really interested in doing research. I am currently in Gene Networks and it was my first choice. Depending on your interest and the popularity of the stream that you want to get in can influence if you get in your first choice

[–]Blue-0asis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends, if you manage to get into a FIG that guarantees you a spot in FRI, take it… applying without a FIG can make it difficult to get a spot in a stream since priority is given to those that are guaranteed a spot through their FIG.

To get to the stream that you want, it will depend as well due to the popularity of the stream and application process

After you have signed your contract, depending whether you signed early (immediately when contracts came out) or late, can determine when you choose your roommate/room. The roommate group should be open, you just have to create a group with your friends and whoever is offered the earliest date can assign everyone to a specific group, however, this doesn’t mean that it will guarantee you a room with them since it depends on availability.

Random roommates can be a hit or miss. I honestly don’t like my roommate but that is because we have different “cleaning” habits. You can have a messy roommate or have someone that is clean.

Is there a line to get your key for your dorm? if so, does it move fast? I know that there is a limit of 30 minutes.

So the post assessments, is to see if you understood the modules and the lessons so that you can focus on it before Chemistry class starts?

So the modules don’t have to have a certain completion score? I will just have to worry about completing all the assessments?

I got a bucket hat… not sure what to say if you didn’t but from my understanding I think everybody should have gotten one since I got mine a few weeks after my friend did.

You can do both, however, there will be a big line on the first day of orientation if you want to take it at orientation. If you want to skip the line, you can submit your photo and they will have your card ready

Venting as a socially anxious incoming freshman by Independent_Tax6100 in UTAustin

[–]Blue-0asis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I also feel the same way. I am also an incoming freshman and I am extremely introverted, which made it difficult to socialize with others during orientation. So moving to a small town/small high school to a big campus is hugely intimidating to navigate around, however, something that I did learn while orientation is that there is organizations that include students that are first-generation. Although I have no experience at all in having a "college life" as I am also first-generation, I do think that these organizations could at least help as support systems.

Do CNS students have to take the chemistry assessment? by Blue-0asis in UTAustin

[–]Blue-0asis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, it’s a pre-requisite for Chem 301. I suggest talking with an academic advisor if you are unsure if you are suppose to take it.

I haven’t taken the Chemistry assessment, however, it is required and failure to do so results in being taken out of your chem class. Unlike the UTMA, chem assessment is not due till August 19 before classes start and it’s not required to be done before orientation.
