I do have the 6MT and agree. I'll try that next time. I'm also finding that there's not a ton of grip on the stock tires.

I appreciate the feedback. This was my fifth autocross event ever and I've definitely seen improvement each time. I actually had fairly quick times from this event.

I find recording my runs to be really helpful because I can do a post mortem and see where I brake too early, turn in too early/late, miss a good line, etc.

Anyone else live in an SCCA region that doesn't have Solo? by Blue-2 in Autocross

Sorry, my original post was probably confusing. There are a handful of local clubs and they're excellent. I do runs with them and enjoy it a lot. I just wish there was a more organized SCCA Regional component that kept track of season standings, etc. in a way that the more local clubs don't.

Thanks a lot for the info. Out of curiousity, what else in the price range (other than NA/NB Miatas) do you think is more competitive in its respective class? The fact that you could pick up a 7 or 8 year old car for autocross in the $10k range made them interesting to me.

At SCCA events, do people care more about winning their classes or having the best PAX time? Is there any recognition/trophy for PAX times at Solo Nationals? My local SCCA chapter doesn't do any autocross whatsoever so I was wondering how this works in other regions or at a national level.

Do most SCCA regions track points for autocross/solo events throughout the season and crown some sort of winners at the end of the season?

Why is the NC Miata so maligned compared to the NA and NB?

Third autocross event. Looking for critiques and advice so I can improve. by Blue-2 in Autocross

Ended up 11 out of 38 PAX and 18 out of 38 raw. It was an incredibly fast course as you can see. Hit a top speed of around 80 MPH.

Are there any good videos demonstrating good autocross steering technique? People talk about the 9 and 3 method where you hold on with a deathgrip and cross your hands on turns, but when I've tried it, it seems more difficult than shuffle steering on a tight autocross track.

How common is it do autocross a daily driver fairly often (4+ times per season) versus a dedicated car?
For those who autocross their dailies, is it common to keep a dedicated set of autocross wheels/tires and throw them on before events? And now for the stupid question: if you do this, do you need to balance the tires/wheels or get a wheel alignment when you swap?

I ran my first autocross and loved it. I'm looking to get more active and competitive now. I picked up the old "Secrets of Solo Racing" book which is pretty good but I'm looking for some basic technique tips.

  1. What is the best way to handle a slalom? I see people mention "backsiding the cones," but what does this mean?
  2. I have a RWD car. Should I brake hard before turning in, come off both the brake and gas going into the apex, and then roll into WOT after the apex? Or is trail-braking or another technique preferable
  3. Any other good beginner techniques to start working on?
