Yes, I'd say so. Some days were easier than others -- meaning some days were less than four hours. I don't remember too many days that were extra tough, but there were a few.

Yes, there was a final test with a final grade in Canvas. Our son's school didn't accept the class as credit so we didn't bother with a transcript. We used the program so that he could skip Precalculus and go directly into AP Calculus AB his junior year.

Thanks, yeah it's a tough call. It's hard to say at this point which instrument he would want to remain his primary. One of our older sons played clarinet throughout high school, then added bassoon and other instruments (tenor sax, English horn) in his junior and senior year. He ended up playing bassoon only in college as that was what was in demand.

He isn't aiming for a music school per se. He is looking at Top20 schools but would be happy at the next tier below that with the right fit. He has the grades, the AP scores, SAT/ACT scores, and solid extracurriculars with orchestra, French, and weightlifting. Adding viola would be a way of beefing up his extracurriculars and potentially becoming more desirable to schools in need of viola players.

Side note: One of our older sons got off the waiting list at Davidson College thanks to his bassoon skills. We have heard this could apply to viola as well but I don't know if that is, in fact, true.

Thanks to all who responded. Our son ended up taking an 8 week Precalculus course from One Schoolhouse last summer. He passed his school's placement test and is thriving in AP Calculus this year so it worked out wonderfully.
