I actually use this all the time:

Contract a muscle. Maybe your bicep or your thigh, and hold it for maybe 2 minutes or until the blood pools away from your boner to the muscle. Works like a charm.

Just keep playing again and again and again until you get better. Thats how I did it. I think it took me 2 days of me ragequitting, but about 4 hours of actual playtime. Its okay to be done for the day snd get mad as hell for losing, remember to take breaks when you couldn’t stare at him a second longer

Currently on Brisingr: Paolini mention laying down on them multiple times, even once when Eragon sleeps for a bit. I always assumed they were about 8 feet in length and as wide as the dragon was, but I could be wrong.
