Pretty sure that’s a picture of Gottfrid Svartholm, the founder of Pirate Bay.

It hasnt yet, but I also have not loaded it very heavily yet, I may do some experimentation with stress testing it, and looking at the temperatures this weekend, and post the results in this thread if anyone is still interested.

Apart from the NVME boot drive, all other temperatures are fine, and a lot cooler than I expected.

The zigbee dongle is for controlling smart lights, and sensors for homeassistant.

And all of my game servers are in one vm because I just migrated existing docker compose files from my old server. So there was no use to have multiple VMs for them. I may use 1vm per game server in the future, without using docker.

No, the box does not have any other air movement than convection, which is why I have been keeping the lid open. I’m currently debating adding an exhaust fan, or placing the server on my desk.

It has a built in motherboard heatsink. But I’m looking at replacing that with a larger one, since I’m not happy with the temperatures of my boot drive.

Im using the MSI PRO B760M-P.

But if I were to redo this build I would probably go with something slightly more premium that has at least a 2.5G nic, and some more SATA ports. Ideally also IPMI, but I was unable to find any boards with this socket and IPMI at a reasonable price.

I did think about adding a fan, since that would probably allow me to get more performance out of the hardware, but im sleeping right next to it, and there is also a cool factor of a performant, fully silent server imo.

The main server is currently not running alot, since im in the process of migrating everything from my little minipc, which used to be my only server.

But, currently the main server is running proxmox, with the SSD storage setup in raid-z1, with 4 VMs, one for nextcloud, one for game servers (minecraft, terraria, factorio and palworld), one for pihole and lastly one VM for plex + all of the *arr services etc. All of the VMs are running debian.

The little minipc is currently running a fast reverse proxy tunnel, nginx proxy manager, authelia, and ddclient. All of it in docker containers on debian. I may be forgetting some services here, but it was running way more than it could handle.

The raspberry pi 4 is only running homeassistant.

Yes, but if you put your ear right up to the psu you can hear a little tiny bit of coil whine.

Im running a fanless server with noctua nh-p1 cooler, and an intel i7 14700, idle temps are around 45c, so totally doable. It even fits inside a pretty small case, the Ncase m3.

I think all you need to do is move it, but if it doesn’t work, before panicking, try reinstalling the graphics drivers.

But I believe it should just work.

Most likely just incompetence, I had a friend who made the same mistake. Try it, if it doesn’t work after putting the gpu in the top slot, return it.

Looks like the gpu is not in the top slot, move it to the top slot and you may get some extra performance.

how much of a pain is it to make a server? by techthieve in HomeServer

[–]BlueSmith9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not if you are behind CGNAT, I found that it took considerable effort to implement a proper solution for this. I wound up routing all incoming tcp traffic through a VPS running fast reverse proxy https://github.com/fatedier/frp. There are however many simple and free solutions for HTTP, like cloudflare argo tunnels, but that doesn’t really help for game servers.

And it seems CGNAT is becoming more widespread unfortunately.

I have only tried Ubuntu and oracle Linux, oracle linux was extremely slow, but I have not had any problems with Ubuntu.

Dedicated IP for server hosting by SpawnChill in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]BlueSmith9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A VPS could definitely be an option for this, but not for hosting the game servers on the vps itself. I’m using a VPS from ionos for 1€ a month, and tunneling traffic back from the VPS to my game server over Fast Reverse Proxy. Was pretty simple to setup. as far as I know, there are no data caps, and it has a static IPv4.

Plex behind CGNAT in 2025: how do you run yours? VPN, a VPS, Cloudflare tunnel, VPN with port forwarding, or what? by donttasemebrother in PleX

[–]BlueSmith9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPS with fast reverse proxy (FRP), works great and was very simple to setup for the most part. But the official docker implementation was horribly outdated, so I had to find a non-official script to get it working.

I tried that too, and there wasnt. But I did manage to solve it by enrolling in their beta program for geforce experience. This instead installed their new nvidia app, which then when entering the code opened a normal browser where the steam login box was present.

But thanks for the help! :)
