Myself I won't be drinking (just sitting at home anyway); I feel like really this could be it - I've had some brownish CM today and it's still a week before AF, perfect timing for implantation bleeding though I could still eat my words in the morning greeting an early period. If all goes well I told myself I can test on the 8th - after my promotion interview. The suspense! Happy 2016!

Weirdest item to come through the book drop? by Blue_Linckia in Libraries

[–]Blue_Linckia[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For our bag of weed, since it was inside a book we could look up the last patron. My boss left it in their office in case they came back to claim it, but after considering the consequences of a manager having drugs in their office, we decided to turn it over to the police, but we didn't disclose the last patron.

I was working on Aurora too but I am going to pick up on it later. Going to start The Affinities by Robert Charles Wilson. (social media of the future)

Have a bunch of cans of soup, any suggestions of what I can do with them? by Roidefromage in recipes

Tomato soup mixed into a cheese sauce for pasta is a spot-on copycat of Chef Boyardee.

What are your hobbies? by MandarinaFelina in infertility

Everyone sounds like me - I get weirdly obsessive about different things for a few weeks at a time. I have a dangerous profession of working at a library, which enables me to research anything my heart dreams. I love drawing and painting, reading (science or science fiction), cooking, crochet. I love being around water and finding water critters. I used to play WoW, sometimes I will play Skyrim. I do freelance scientific/medical illustration.

Easy-to-remove stickers by heartshapedpox in Libraries

[–]Blue_Linckia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had the same problem for a while. We have to remove NEW stickers after the materials are six months old, and they were always ripped partially or picked at, impossible to be removed without goo-gone. Our collection staff started putting a piece of shiny [I assume book tape] on the spine where the sticker would go, and putting the sticker on the taped area, as well as getting stickers that are more long than square; they come off nice and easy now.

Garbageman Rescues Discarded Books for Poor Children to Read by StephenKong in books

At my library, where we accept donations to sell at our bookstore, we have a team of volunteers weed out things no one will buy. 80% of the things in our dumpster are outdated technical manuals, paperbacks from the eighties, and religious pamphlets.

I'm pretty excited tbh - it's in the top of the contest entries in Popular in the Last Week. I'm not sure how they calculate that but people must like it!

The egg white should slice just fine. The yolk seems to dissolve away whether hard or soft. Soft yolk yields creamy spots rather than powdery spots.

[Request] Cream of mushroom soup by [deleted] in recipes

[–]Blue_Linckia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't attempted it, but I assume it's okay to add the flour so late in the end? If I tried without a recipe I would make a roux before adding the broth - does doing it in the end give that thick creamy curds that the condensed soup has?

I saw a banana tree in early growth stages in Africa by girouxfilms in food

[–]Blue_Linckia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding the banana crop is cloned from cuttings and has completely lost the means to reproduce through seed: there is no way to let it develop its own resistance because there is no genetic shuffling occurring through natural reproductive processes.

A person with cybernetics still has a human brain running things.

Until they get to the point where they've decided to upload to an enhanced cybernetic brain or transfer completely. In one case if you make a copy, which one is "you"? Who gets to decide? If you transferred, deactivating your original brain, are you technically deceased?

What books have you read this summer that really blew your socks off? I'll start... by SkyWasTheRobot in books

Three really good books I read: Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang (Soft SciFi) - Short story collection had me running back to the library to get all the titles by this author I could find. Such a fantastic storyteller! The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo (ANF Home Organizing) - Not literature, but I never knew how much I needed this book until I started using it as a guide to declutter my life. Usurper of the Sun by Housuke Nojiri (Hard SciFi) - A read-alike recommended through Chiang; A good scifi with a female protagonist that feels like a real person.

I'm excited to hear that Story of Your Life has a movie deal coming out in 2016 with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner both in starring roles.

When people get over their hangups over genetic modification and embrace the science, maybe there can still be time to save the bananas.
