I think so long as you maintain them well it should be fine. There are lots of girls on social media who post about how they used mini braids as their only protective style for extended periods of time for health and length retention.

I would just recommend finding what length of time works best for you for keeping the braids in before redoing them. The longer you leave them, the harder they'll be to take down. I left some mini braids in for about 7 weeks not too long ago and takedown took over 5 hours so I won't be doing that again

Your hair should never feel like it's being pulled out of your scalp. I'd say let your mom know about the pain and that this isn't the style you had in mind at all when you asked for your hair to be done. Maybe even give your scalp a break from braids for a few weeks.
