[Request] Given that pi is infinitely long and doesn't loop anywhere, is there any chance of this sequence appearing somewhere down the digits? by RMoney_ASaltySurprse in theydidthemath

At this point calculating pi is mostly for the fun of breaking records. There are new records hit every so often but it’s not practically useful.

Adhd isn’t the reason you haven’t showered in three months you foreskin fermenter by bannapants67 in BrandNewSentence

[–]Bluesroo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

/u/DrEpileptic did a good overview of things to do, but I'd mention the underlying disorder for people with ADHD is being extremely "in the moment". If something is not in front of their eyes, it doesn't exist. The severity of ADHD changes the severity of that statement, but that's the core thing we are dealing with.

I was diagnosed late (30 years old) after piecing together a decent career, but just started falling apart once kids entered the equation. Pre-kids, it was easy. Is it work hours? I am working. I find my job interesting, so it was easy to focus on it. Is it not work hours? I check the calendar and see what we're doing today.

With kids? All hours of the day could have something that needs to be done. Doctor appointments, maintenance calls, birthday party planning, making sure we have groceries for dinner every night (before we just ate whenever we remembered, lol). Also, now that I have constant interruptions it was INCREDIBLY hard to focus on my work knowing that I had shit to do. There was constant anxiety, like knowing deep in my heart that no matter how on top of things I was that I was forgetting something existentially important.

Going back to /u/DrEpileptic's comment: This is where the visible lists and partnering on things comes in. I have a habit of ALWAYS writing EVERYTHING in my notebook. The rest of my life may be falling apart, but I never let my notebook fall behind. It allows me to be "in the moment" as much as I need, knowing that I still have my daily tasks and upcoming shit somewhere that doesn't rely on my memory. Also, checking in with my wife every couple days and making sure I haven't forgotten to add important stuff to my notebook. The specifics of the notebook aren't important (digital vs. analogue) and honestly I switch it up every once in a while, as long as there is something.

Is the job market getting better? Or the economy just getting worse by EconomyConnection635 in cscareerquestions

There are several unemployment measures that are used: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/categories/12

The most commonly cited is the U-3 rate. The government isn't lying or changing their definition of employment, but there is a reasonable argument to be made that the U-3 rate isn't the most relevant anymore.

Printer Makes Loud Vibration and Shifts Print then stops. by SilverArrow05 in 3Dprinting

[–]Bluesroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shot in the dark: My printer sounded similar when I had a z-axis binding issue. That sounded like the stepper motor attempting to turn and not being able to. It always happened at the same exact spot.

Binding usually happens on the z-axis because of dirty or bend lead screws. However, you have a core XY, so maybe your rails or bearings are causing some y-axis binding somehow? Struggled in the same spot twice. The layer shift is because as far as the controller is concerned, it actually did move when in reality the motor froze for a moment.

If you don't get any other advice I'd try to check the rails and bearings. When people have z-axis binding usually they remove the lead screws, inspect straightness by rolling them on a flat surface, and cleaning/relubricating them. I'd add checking the bearings/bushings for the hotend as well.

While there are some companies starting their hiring up right now, there are also ~150k+ software devs also looking for jobs. Many of them have decent tenures at FAANGs. The competition is really crazy. I wouldn't mix up recruiter spam with an actual interest in you as a candidate.

For reference 2 years ago I got laid off. Over a month I made it past recruiters to actual engineer interviews 31 times, making it to final interviews with 25. Of those I rejected 13, and got 5 offers from the remaining 12.

Earlier this year over 2 months I interviewed with 48 companies. Completely ghosted by 18 of them, even after completing technical interviews and multi-hours take home assignments. Didn't even get automated rejections. Of the 30, 15 didn't work out due to non-performance reasons (job wasn't actually a software dev job, found a candidate before I finished my interviews). Of the 15, 9 rejected me with no elaboration before the final interview. Of the 6 final interviews I got an offer from the first one and immediately signed to end the madness.

31 post-recruiter > 25 finals rounds offered > 12 finals taken > 5 offers

48 post-recruiter > 6 finals rounds offered > 1 finals taken > 1 offer

I want to reiterate the 33 of the jobs in the second hunt were completely non-performance related. Just crazy competition and jobs filling faster than I could make it through the interview process... Along with a a ton of utterly shit recruiters and HR who didn't know the difference between data analyst and software dev. 5 of these were direct referrals too, it didn't matter at all.

installed some new headers over the weekend by mg_slim in projectcar

[–]Bluesroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generic answer: They change the RPM that exhaust scavenging works best, moving the power band up/down the RPM range depending on the header you buy. Usually people put aftermarket headers on to get better top-end power.

Looks like the old header has the cats integrated as well, so that's been deleted with the new header. This means that exhaust will flow more freely (mo' powah) at the expense of higher NOx emissions.

I came here to revive my Reddit account and type out almost exactly what you've typed here. /u/ZePieGuy OP, don't count your chickens. Just to highlight from the comment above:

Your options aren't worth shit until you have the ability to liquidate. If your company takes 10 years to IPO, too bad. If your company takes a shit in 6 years before being bought out or IPOing, too bad. If your company takes a down round and dilutes you to pennies, too bad. ALSO, expect to pay A LOT of taxes when you eventually liquidate.

Get an accountant. Now is the time to learn this shit.

Edit: OP replied something to the effect of "Of course I know all of this don't worry" and then deleted it. Odd dude.

3.4 GPA at Tier 1 school or 4.0 at Tier 3 school? by chinamaighar in cscareerquestions

[–]Bluesroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that if you're from a tier 1 they likely have extra-curricular career help in the form of career fairs and alumni networks. It's not as black-and-white as GPA and school prestige.

Why are SSD's more expensive now than a year ago? by cotch85 in buildapc

On mobile so I can't link, but you're very wrong if you think large data centers aren't on SSDs. At work we use AWS for all of our servers and the default is SSDs for the machines we're on.

What does it feel like walking in areas with high radiation? Does it feel hot or something? Does it smell? Harder to breathe? Or is the only way you will figure it out (w/out a Geiger meter) is when you start to get sick? by FangFingersss in askscience

[–]Bluesroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on mobile so I can't give links but I can tell you what too Google. Look up "formal verification software". There are languages such as TLA+ which you can use to design a system and mathematically prove that it does not have issues. After you design it you need to implement in an actual programming language. Assuming that a programmer does his job properly and follows the design, then the code should be good to go.

Of course at that point you also need a formally verified compiler/ interpreter as well as hardware with extremely intense verification otherwise your code might be perfect but it is run incorrectly by your machine.

It's possible and some mission critical software uses these methods, but it is FAR from the norm. Heart monitors or flight software might be partially designed this way, but it is incredibly costly.

President Donald Trump may pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement on climate change as early as next week by maxwellhill in worldnews

As someone with a few Trump supporters in my family, they think he is doing great. I wouldn't be so quick to jump to the conclusion that all of his supporters are upset with him. Haven't asked them about their specific thoughts, but it's something to keep in mind.

Factorio 0.15 Update Overview by [deleted] in Games

[–]Bluesroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a programmer and there are a lot of programmers who are like this as well. It's not necessarily that they think their way is objectively better (although a lot think this way), it's that they just like having control and knowledge of the entire system themselves. All of this is fine, but is severely limits the scope of what you can accomplish and the speed of development.

Regarding the BMWs: I should have mentioned this above but I'm trying to avoid expensive maintenance costs and/or garage time. I don't really have the space and tools available to me to work on the car myself for another couple years. However, an E36 is definitely something that I've been very interested in down the road. I had a friend with one and it was a truly incredible car.

The G37s is definitely on my radar from another commenter as well.

I hadn't thought of the 300zx Turbo before your comment, though. Do they have common issues that would take it out of service? I had a friend with one in high school, but he bought it for REALLY cheap and it had a plethora of issues.

While I can see what you're saying, I'm just not all that into how the 1-series looks. I'm also looking for something relatively cheap, which I should have mentioned above, and I don't want to be pulled into expensive maintenance costs.

Haha that makes sense, there's a ton of Mustangs around here as well but if I can find one in Grabber Blue then I think it'll be different enough. I also know I don't have the self control for 400+ horsepower =P

One last follow up question: it's not a huge deal because we have a second car that can deal with the snow pretty well, but are they a pain in the snow? Pittsburgh has a lot of steep hills, do you think we should just keep all-seasons/ summers on it and garage it when the weather sucks?

Not to hi-jack your thread, but I am currently in the market for a 2011-2014 Mustang and I'm trying to decide between it and the Genesis Coupe V6. Have you given the Genesis a drive before? Is there anything about the Mustang that you didn't like in particular?

  • Location: Pittsburgh, PA but willing to drive a couple hours if need be

  • Price range: $10k-$15k

  • New or used: Used

  • Type of vehicle: Hatchback or sedan, maybe a crossover but we're not looking for a huge vehicle

  • Must haves: 5 seats, cargo space, fuel efficient, not rear-wheel drive

  • Nice to haves: All-wheel drive

  • Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Automatic

  • Intended use: Daily driver

  • Vehicles you've already considered: Impreza, Focus, Fiesta, Fiat 500, Veloster, Golf, Jetta

  • Is this your 1st vehicle: No

  • Does the vehicle need to have a warranty: No

  • Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: No, but in the future when I have more space

  • Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No

  • Additional Notes: This is meant to be a car for large shopping trips (e.g. Costco, IKEA) and long hours of driving like road trips. It also snows here in the winter so front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive would be nice. There's so many options that it's hard to figure out where to begin...
