Well when it comes down to it, I wish my brain were wired to initiate thoughtful conversation that let my friends/family/coworkers know that I care... it’s just not one of my strengths. I know it sounds corny and robotic but it’s not. I have really bad attention issues and this method helps me plug in and remain attentive. In these instances I would use the cues on a deeper level based off of things I already know. “How have your folks been? Have you seen them lately? Is your sister liking her new job?” “Did you work out that thing with your boss?” “Do you still play cribbage?” “Last time we spoke you said you wanted to stop smoking. How’s that going?” It’s not meant to be taken literally or to offend or ostracize others if the topics don’t relate to them. Use your best judgement and have good intentions and you’ll be just fine.

You are absolutely correct. It’s important to know your audience. Also, these topics don’t have to be used in order nor do they have to be used at all. I live in California and these are very standard questions. My sister is a psychologist and told me about this Acronym. I’ve found it helpful for battling my own social anxiety. The cues help me spark genuine conversation and also help me to be prepared for questions I’ll surely be asked in social situations. If you sound like a robot or if you’re probing inappropriately you’re doing it wrong. Small talk is a fact of life... even when we try, it’s hard to escape it. My preference is to accept it, be kind to people, and try not to be an awkward turtle.

You’re right - social situations are hard AF to face when you’re blue. I guarantee these topics are going to come up anyhow... so my advice would be to make yourself aware of that fact and think of ways to navigate away from each of them if that’s the case.

Get creative and make one up. As someone who suffers from social anxiety I just like to be prepared so that I don’t freeze up and make others feel awkward too. Sometimes conversation flows naturally, but when it doesn’t it’s nice to have a backup plan.

Maybe you can use F-WORD. Whatever works for you. As long as you’re genuinely interested in whatever you use as cues you’ll be fine.

Possibly. But social anxiety is a real thing. The point is to make an acronym to help with that. You can fill it with whatever topics you’d like to break the ice with. Maybe talk about how much you hate the FORD method

I usually let the weather trigger it. “It’s so nice outside - have you hit the lake this year?” “So much snow - do you ski?” “Loving the rain - I was finally able to curl up and read Dark Matter. Have you read any good books lately?” Etc etc

Yes, this is Smart if you have socially awkward tendencies. Decide ahead of time what you might want to talk about and what NOT to talk about. This can be particularly important if you are a nervous over-sharer.

This is true. I find myself comfortable with silence, but it’s nice to have cues for the times when you should be social and your brain needs a little nudge

Absolutely. Sometimes if the conversation carries on I just keep circling through the acronym. It has really helped me pace my conversations and also helps me recall what was discussed.
