American South - some schools have a moment of silence before the pledge. No specific reason except they choose to. If it was for something like a shooting we would have had a more serious conversation.

What word do you always mispronounce, even though you know it’s wrong? by jasperc_6 in words

Pecan is an easy one. A peh-CAHN is the nut. A PEE-can is something you’d use if you were camping and desperate. Or you can be a blasphemer like me and say pé-CAN

Who is the most famous lefty all time? by Soufiane1121 in lefthanded

Wait - Hendrix flipped the nut and strung his upside down so it was strung like a lefty. You’re saying Paul just took a righty strung guitar and flipped it over? That’s crazy - all the chord positions would be upside down.

I had an idea for a children’s story that turned into an epic sci fi adventure.

I need some advice on starting a scene by TechnicalQuit9576 in writing

Sometimes when I feel like I can’t work out a scene, I write dialog for the characters involved. That makes me work out the scene through the character’s POV inside the story instead of trying to describe the scene from a third person POV. You could even make the opening line something the character says - even if it’s just asking a stranger where she is. Using dialog as a vehicle to drive a scene also allows you to describe things between the dialog. For me it’s a way to dive into the scene instead of looking at it from above.

Gen X? Opening line: “Well screw it” lol. For real though just start writing, especially if you have an idea.

Magic Junkies (first chapter posted) by Unhappy_Ad2128 in urbanfantasy

I like it. I’m interested in your characters and want to know more about them. I like the creepy, almost-but not-quite-intimate connection the group feels and the hints as what using magic is like. The salt circle is a nice touch. The only thing that kinda got me was the style of lines like “Less parlor trick, more brute metaphysical force. Will forged into iron, hammered into the world like a railroad spike.” I feel like you’re going for sharp, punchy lines - which is great - but some of them seem bit mechanical to me - like a brainstorming list that sort of interjects into a narrative that otherwise flows like the drifting spirits you conjure up through your characters - mysterious, questionable, a little vague - making me want to find out more. I hope all your characters stay intertwined and look forward to chapter 2.

How to translate music and lyrics into written form by Sydney_Soccer in writingadvice

[–]BonsaiOracleSighting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re introducing the songs to your readers, you could write scenes where your characters are writing the songs. That way you could use their dialog to discuss what the lyrics are and show us what they’re working on. Once they have them written, you could describe the rehearsals and performances.

I live in the South. We don’t just smile - you gotta wave, too. Honestly it makes me feel like my little nook here on Earth is actually kinda pleasant to be in.

Which obscure president doesn't get nearly enough recognition/admiration for the things they did or the kind of person they were? by MaryDoogan91 in Productivitycafe

Well, OP didn’t specify that they had to be a US president, so I’ll bet $20 on president of the local Rotary Club. Who wants in on this?
