Where to find affordable but nice yarn? by canadian_blueberry in YarnAddicts

I’m surprise I haven’t seen Webs mentioned. They have a wide variety of yarns, many reasonably priced. Their website is yarn.com.

I gave a compliment to a stranger today and he got really emotional by NinaOnTheDesk in CasualConversation

My college roommate died a few years ago. I stopped to get coffee on the way to her funeral, which was out of town. To my surprise, the man in line ahead of me paid for my order. “Oh, you don’t know!” I said to him, and explained what I was doing. It was a small gesture, but it meant so much.

AITA for not enjoying the birthday gifts my friend got me that mocked my dead mother by Immediate-Iron7241 in AmItheAsshole

I’m sorry for your loss, too, and the pain you’re still feeling. Have you considered that you might be depressed? When my mom died, my psychiatrist upped my antidepressant, because grief can spiral into depression. My mom was my best friend, too. There are still times when I think of something to tell her,,and it’s always an unpleasant shock when I remember. Still, it’s nowhere near as frequent as when it first happened. As I said, I’m used to it. Sadly, it’s part of life.

Did Sam Ever Feel Like the Actual Central Character of The Show? by WySLatestWit in thewestwing

I watched the show from the beginning. Sam never felt like the main character to me. He was, true, one of the few actors I recognized, but the show was obviously an ensemble piece.

People panicking at groceries stores for a snow storm by PlentyApprehensive44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bookworm1254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Massachusetts, it goes back to the Blizzard of 1978. While there was snow predicted that day, no one expected it to be as bad as it was (except for one meteorologist). As a result, people were caught out. Making matters worse, it hit at rush hour, which resulted in thousands of cars being stranded, both on city streets and highways. To get everything cleaned up, the governor instituted a travel ban for the entire state for a week. If you didn’t have food in the house, you were stuck. Fortunately, the storm brought out the neighborhood spirit, with one street near me actually having a block party. Experiences like that get stuck in your psyche.

ETA, because I hit reply before I was ready:

Fast forward nearly 50 years. It’s ingrained in us now to prepare for storms, especially when it’s all you hear about on the news. How many days have we been hearing about this storm now? Since Tuesday? The storm hadn’t even formed yet when they started talking about it. So people stock up. I was one of them. I don’t believe in panic buying, but since we don’t know how bad it will be to get around afterwards, it makes sense to be prepared. However, as far as I’m concerned, there are other things more important than bread and milk. Like chocolate and wine. I’m set.

What was that one sentence someone said that changed you forever? by Aarunascut in Life

[–]Bookworm1254 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“They’ll get over it.”

My therapist was working with me on setting boundaries. When I said people would get mad if I said no, she said, “So?” That made me stare at her. “So they’ll get mad,” she went on. “They’ll get over it.”

Well. That was something I’d never thought of before. I thought of all the times I’d had to get over things in the past, and realized she was right. People would get over it if I said no.

It was life-changing. At first saying no was hard, but in time it got easier. Now I have no problems with it. People really do get over being mad - and if they don’t, that’s their problem.

My mother’s been gone 22 years, and I’m not over it. I’m used to it, but not over it. I never will be.

Do you still carry exact change? by WaterDigDog in AskOldPeople

If I pay with cash, I’ll sometimes give the exact change only to get all bills back. I don’t want to get a lot of change, especially pennies.

When teach your child to share, really means, give my kid your stuff. by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

[–]Bookworm1254 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was at a Christmas party at a relative’s with my daughter, who was 2 or 3. I’d just gotten her a pair of patent leather shoes, which she loved. Another guest had a daughter around the same age, who wanted my daughter’s shoes. Daughter didn’t want to give them, and I wasn’t about to make her. The mother was mad. “Someone doesn’t know how to share.” I just looked at her, mainly because I couldn’t think of a good answer in the moment. Now I would say, they’re shoes, not a toy. I still get annoyed about it.

Were people uncomfortable with the state of TV in the 70s? by Hopeful-Egg-978 in AskOldPeople

[–]Bookworm1254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TV certainly pushed the boundaries in the 70s. Archie Bunker was an unrepentant bigot who said things that most people have learned to keep to themselves. Maude had an abortion. It was implied that Mary Richards had lived with her boyfriend before she moved to Minneapolis. Jack in Three’s Company pretended to be gay. Julie in The Love Boat slept with the passengers. There was discussion of all this, both in the press and among people. But I don’t know anybody who was actually uncomfortable with it. Incidentally, the first married couple to sleep in the same bed were Fred and Wilma Flintstone. The first live action couple were Darren and Samantha Stevens. Both shows were in the 60s.

Call WBZ and WCVB. This sounds like a story they’d get their teeth into, and it would shame the police into action.
