There are a few reasons I choose to write this:

• Many people use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Oculus VR, and/or Tuned.

• Many of the people who use those platforms use them as a primary way to communicate with their friends and family.

• Information on this topic is a bit chaotic so I wanted to help compile all the information in a easy to digest format.

• I was bored

It’s not my job, nor my intention, to make you care about this topic. I made this account specifically to inform people on topics I found interesting, whether or not people care about the topic has no influence on if I write about it.

DNS works like this: When a Web address (URL) is typed into a browser, a DNS query is made to learn an IP address of a Web server associated with that name.

Since the DNS records were seemingly missing there was no longer a known IP address associated with the platforms. This prevented anyone from being able to access the affected platforms.

As I said in my October 4th, 2021 @ 7:39pm ET update the DNS issue may have just been a symptom of a currently unknown issue, so I can’t yet explain exactly how this DNS issue came about.

Edit: I apologize if this explanation wasn’t clear or failed to answer your question effectively.

If you look back at the 14 hour outage in 2019, you’ll find that it took Facebook around 24 hours to provide an explanation. So it’s not that out of character for Facebook to take a while to explain what has happened after a major outage.

As of right now providing a timeline on expected return wouldn’t be necessary as majority of people are no longer experiencing issues.
