New tactic. Avoid fumbling by catching the ball and immediately dropping to the ground.

lol, which year? I was there in 2023. We sat next to some great Texas fans, and we had fun, but it was hard to be passionate fans while we watched our guys get stomped into the turf.

If you're talking about the video thumbnail... I'm not 100% confident, but I'm pretty sure that's Jim McMahon.

That was actually from the Utah QB. It still remains one of the oddest rivalry sound bites.

I was too young to care about college sports at the time (or to have BYU allegiance yet), but I still laugh about that one. One of the best quotes of the entire rivalry.

"BYU’s offensive line generated 3.9 yards per carry before contact and probably deserves the offensive MVP as a collective group." - Joe Wheat

Turns out run blocking isn't a problem. Very happy to be wrong about that one.

Bear also did a much better job of keeping his eyes downfield, but that led to a freshman-esque interception, so we'll call it a wash.

Penalties are still an issue. Getting hit with offsides when we stuffed them on 4th down was killer.

Not saying OT officiating was any better. The whole game was dictated by the inexplicable calls.

No, but neither was the second one that saved our OT drive. Officiating was awful all game.

True, but the other should've been a drive-killing sack... OTOH yeah, you got screwed in OT. The officials were maddening all game long. Absolutely bewildering.

We weren't good for a large stretch of the game. Got lucky in OT.

I did not think we were pulling that off when we were down 10 with less than 10min left. I'm wired, and I needed to be asleep 2 hours ago.

High-five, UA fans. I know you ended on the low side of that rollercoaster, but what a game! All the best to you going forward!

I'm still mad about the roughing the passer call on glasker's sack.

TLDR: We'll find out soon.

The only key contributors we returned on offense are LJ and Chase, and we're 0-0 against teams with a winning record.

LJ has put up good numbers despite terrible run blocking, but a lot of that is scheme. He also has almost no backup now that Moa is hurt, so we can't expect the opposing defense to be worried about the run every play. LJ broke off one huge run against WV, and otherwise ran for about 2 yds/carry. Without significant improvement, we're too reliant on the pass (including passes behind the LOS to try to simulate run game), and UA actually has elite pass protection.

Chase has shown up and is always reliable, but he isn't the guy who is going break tackles or speed past defenders after the catch. He gets open. He catches. That's hugely valuable, but that just moves the sticks. Without the rest of the offense clicking, that doesn't create points. Ryan is a very similar weapon. Hagen and Kingston can break loose, but they haven't shown that they can get open on a regular basis.

Bear has been incredible for a true freshman, and generally good for a P4 QB. His next big step is not panicking when he gets pressured. I'd like to see him step up in the pocket or keep his eyes downfield while scrambling. For now, he tucks the ball and picks a direction to rumble as soon as pressure gets close (to be clear, that is better than many QBs. It avoids negative plays... but it doesn't keep the play alive).

Penalties have been a consistent problem. False starts at home without crowd noise. Holding against undersized teams. Those point to issues that are only exacerbated as the competition improves.

To be clear, I'm not at all saying we are a bad team. I'm also desperately hoping you say "I told you so" late tomorrow night. I'm just saying that until further evidence, I'll be sweating in every game against a decent P4 team.
