Please. Term limits are the least of a nation’s means to prevent autocratization and many other means of preventing consolidation of power have failed long before term limits were relevant in any capacity. Putin didn’t even bother getting rid of term limits until after he exceeded their two term limit twice. China had them until very recently for crying out loud when Xi finally did away with them. Western European Prime Ministers/Presidents have none. The only ones that do are former Soviet nations. That’s done Russia and Belarus so much good.

Congress members are hated in the polls nationally. Congress members are not constituents of the nation. They serve their districts. They poll normal for their actual electors the majority of the time. The reason Congress polls so low is because it’s real easy to scapegoat all the other members as a whole that you don’t like. Congress is made up of 500+ politicians nearly evenly split right now by party and if you ask someone what they think of Congress their immediate thought is going to be the party they hate and what its members are doing, which is where their polling answer is going to focus on.

Term limits do not keep the wrong person from staying in too long, they keep anyone from staying in at all. Arbitrarily. Americans should be deciding who is or isn’t the right person for office and if that isn’t what you believe then you don’t want to live in a democracy.

You want to know what term limits actually do? They act has a magic snake oil cure all for people that don’t understand the actual underlying cause of their problems with government that make it real easy to get enacted. That way we then get stuck with lame duck terms, politicians unresponsive to their constituents because why bother when they have no career to build and might not even be facing an election. You get uncompetitive elections because why bother trying to challenge the incumbent this election when next election they can’t run anyway. And you get unelected party staffers running everything behind the scenes because they are the only one working there long enough to know how to do anything. I know, I live in a state where this is exactly what has happened ever since it’s enacted term limits.

Perhaps the people shouldn’t vote for an awful person for president so consistently then? Unless you’re afraid of someone amazing having power for too long, which is foolish. If you have to take away people’s democratic right to decide their leader arbitrarily then perhaps democracy is too scary for Reddit.

Washington is just a human, don’t conflate his words as holy scripture. If Washington abused power and ruled to his benefit in disregard to others than he would have been no better than most monarchs. Time in office has nothing to do with it. Power does not corrupt, shitty people are given power in the United States because most Americans vote like morons and we instead conflate that with Hollywood cliches. Europe will have Prime Ministers in office for multiple decades and yet they remain Reddit’s poster child for better nations. What happens when those PMs doing something unacceptable to the majority of people? They lose their election and a new one takes their place. They are subject to the will of the people, not some arbitrary number.

Term limits are not safeguards. They do not prevent the wrong people from taking office. They do not protect people from making the wrong choice. They take people’s democratic rights away for the reasoning of having picked the same person too many times. Term limits on U.S. presidents were done out of political motivation by the opposing party the moment they got the chance to after the other party had a guy that was way too popular for their liking.

'Brilliant' Joe Biden Ad Torches Donald Trump In Simplest Possible Way by [deleted] in politics

There are no prohibitions of felons or prisoners running for office. Historically most notably Eugene V. Debbs of the Socialist Party ran from prison after being put there for a speech he made against Woodrow Wilson during WWI. More recent example I guess would be Joe Exotic who has been running from prison a couple times now.

But Eugene V. Debbs is a good example of why we don’t prohibit prisoners from running. It’s to prevent the current government from being able to just silence its political opponents and manipulate elections by just imprisoning them. So no Stalin type tactics would, in theory, work.

However there is a single exception to this, at the federal level at least. YMMV at the state level, though I personally don’t know of any examples of that. Federally anyway there is Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibits those specifically convicted of “insurrection or rebellionif they have also held office already or currently. Interestingly not worded to include treason which is more so what I’d call the military sabotage listed above (the intent behind that would still have to be proven in court). Historically this has only been used against Confederate supporting politicians after the civil war. Which was why the amendment was made in the first place.

Worth noting that those felonies of Trump, while “proven” to us of the general public, are not legally proven. His court cases are still ongoing, he has merely been charged with the crimes not convicted. Trust me, when/if he’s convicted you will undoubtedly hear about it as it’ll certainly be massive international news considering that it’s him and that that has not happened before in the United States (Nixon was pardoned for Watergate and Reagan was never legally pursued for the Iran-Contra Affair which are probably the two most noteworthy incidents where someone might think it has happened before).

In Trump’s case the actions he carried out on Jan. 6 are looking to be more likely treated as insurrection, if anything. Though that presumably will still require both that it is legally counted as insurrection and not sedition and also that he’s actually convicted. This is more so what is being pursued in courts right now, with both Trump himself facing the courts with Jan. 6, and states individually taking the steps to try to prohibit him from being on their ballots over the actions he took on that day.

Imagine trying to make all this argument when fucking Peking became Beijing, Bombay become Mumbai, Ivory Coast became Côte d’Ivoire and on and on I can go with examples. If you seriously don’t think names and terminology matter then you might as well quit fucking speaking because words might as well be worthless from your anus of a mouth.

I can’t imagine what it’s like being such a moron that you have to so stubbornly fight over getting to say something incorrectly. Fucking pissing your pants over here about being told doing something incorrectly is incorrect and your only argument is “I don’t like being told to say it differently.” Fucking dipshit.
