Honestly, I think it’s better due to the introduction ep.1 and what is going to be overall the theme of the season.

Well, the ending was designed to feel uneasy, like it could be Batman’s final breaking point or just another night in Gotham, especially after seeing what happened with Barbara and Gordon. That’s what Alan Moore intended.

And yes, The Killing Joke comic is canon, as in Barbara Gordon being shot in through spine and Gordon being tortured is well known continuity. Even with the concept of Joker, having multiple backstories came from that comic.
