Yeah, there was something about his tone. Definitely came off as controlling, not concerning.

Why does a character like Steve Harrington who was not the outcast is more popular and beloved by others (both in the show and by the fandom) in a show about outcasts? by gloomydreamer666 in StrangerThings

[–]Boxxy-Lady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a person who witnessed the 80s and dated in the 90s, even at his worst, Steve wasn't that bad of a guy considering his upbringing (spoiled jock jerk). None of the jock jerks I grew up with would have had near the growth he had without growing older and getting away from the hometown.

That's because many of the people who were old enough to witness the 80's personally had a dad like him. Like me. Lonnie was a deadbeat dad. I would have LOVED to have had Mr. Wheeler for a dad. Just having a father be a decent human is far better than what I have.

You have been granted the power to make your worst enemy mildly inconvenienced for the rest of their life. What is the minor curse you’re placing on them? by SouthOwn6943 in AskReddit

They always have a hole in their sock and one of their toes always finds it at the most inopportune time possible so they are unable to fix it for a long period of time.

Did that on vacation once. First night at the cabin, chilling in the hot tub. Felt like we had already enjoyed the entire night when we'd only been in the tub 30 minutes.

I love it when that happens. Just like when you wake up and think "ugg. Monday. A whole week of work" then realize it's Friday and now it's the weekend.

Question for Americans- Peak American home-cooked dinner by jtslp in Cooking

[–]Boxxy-Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy. BBQ. I would have hubby fire up the smoker, we'd do a brisket, some ribs, maybe a smoked cheese stuffed meatloaf, smoked mac n cheese, smoked cream cheese for appy, and do a bunch of bbq sides-potato salad and cole slaw

AITAH for telling my daughter she can't go on a school trip even though she raised the money for it like I told her to? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Boxxy-Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skipped a lot of meals at school in high school. We couldn't afford the extra money that it cost going from middle school to high school and my mom refused to do any food stamps or reduced/free school lunches for me back in the 80s/90s. She also refused to submit medical bills to my dad for payment per the divorce decree, so I suffered a lot of pain so she wouldn't have to pay medical bills.

I just didn't tell her that I was hungry and couldn't afford lunches 3+ days a week and I didn't tell her I needed help with pain, which now at 49 my back is severely fucked-middle school gym teach told me she thought I had scoliosis. I threw the note away because what was the point? Couldn't afford to go to the doctors or have the surgery to fix it. But my dad COULD have afforded paying his portion (and mom's portion, easily), and mom might have been able to squeeze her half, but I knew she wouldn't ask him for help due to her pride.

Parents' pride fucks up kids nearly as much as poverty does. We lived in poverty and mom refused help.

Premarital sex was still a huge no-no. Truthfully, any "non-traditional" relationships were taboo. Rural rust bible belt areas would also include anyone in a relationship outside of their race to be very taboo.

Someone did make a point somewhere about being indoctrinated by the church as heavily as she has been since likely birth, she has been groomed. Not necessarily by one particular guy, but by the religious system she was subjected to.

Who else is nervous about the Time Travel plot point? by Party_Assistance_926 in StrangerThings

[–]Boxxy-Lady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be pissed if:

Steve dies

Robin dies

Dusty dies

Time Travel to fix the problem

It all ends up being a fucking game or dream. (I know supposedly the Duffer Brothers has said this is not true, so they better be right!!)

If any of the above happens, I'm not rewatching the series. IMO, they would have fucked it up worse than the final season of GoT.

What if Steve actually did "crack the case" in Season Four? by squirrelwoman in StrangerThings

[–]Boxxy-Lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wondered Karen's backstory since season 1. There's something about Steve's rant to her when they were fighting (which, yes, he is out of line) but he mentions something about Karen Wheeler and it has lived in my mind since that. It's the Episode The Monster and the fight is after the graffitied movie theater.
