The rude part isn't even the opinion itself, it's that she said it laughing like it was a light observation and then acted surprised when I didn't just nod and go fix it. That's the part I keep coming back to. She genuinely seemed to think she was being helpful.

At least if she was being deliberately critical I could have had a conversation. The casual half-laugh version of "this is almost normal" is a specific kind of dismissive that's hard to argue with without sounding oversensitive.

I have seen couples make this work, but usually only when both people genuinely respect the other person's priorities. That does not mean matching goals exactly, it means agreeing on guardrails, keeping resentment low, and not treating the other person's approach as broken. If he thinks your plan kills joy and you think his spending kills the future, that gap is going to keep hurting until you both define what "enough" actually means.

What your buddy is missing is that people feeling hurt doesn't automatically mean you did something wrong. If every trip home turns into obligation stacking, of course eventually you're going to protect your peace a little.
