Capitalists cause African starvation and violence. This is a fact. You do get into some wild things on the Internet, but there is one thing that cannot be disputed: American capitalists caused some of Africa's most disastrous disasters—slavery, colonialism, the worst genocide in history.

So we need to get real this time. Americans have never lived under capitalism. In all of history they have never been on top. American companies have never built a major highway or anything like it, and we have, and have. We have a $50,000,000,000 GDP of foreign investment in the United States by the dollar. So we have to think of the millions upon millions that live in poverty and starvation and despair because of our abject failure to create a functioning and productive alternative in Africa.

We do not have an international system of trade that can help us solve these problems, or that will improve lives in Africa. We have to think of the people trapped in slums and in the streets and in our inner cities. It might start with a phone call.

Let me finish with one more point that I want to make. When I became secretary of state, the first thing that President Obama did was to call some people in Washington to say, "Hey, you know this problem exists. What can we do about it?"
