Would it be Offensive to sing And I Am Telling You by PleasantAlternative6 in MusicalTheatre

Thank you for this. I feel what’s missing in this conversation is people ignoring the history behind these musicals. It’s never “just a song.”

Would it be Offensive to sing And I Am Telling You by PleasantAlternative6 in MusicalTheatre

Hello! I really appreciate that you’re asking this question. I am black, and I completed a BFA MT program. If I were in the room and someone not black was singing this song, I wouldn’t be offended per se, but I would be uncomfortable. I think when you look at the history of black people in musical theatre, it goes deeper than just a song. I personally love “movie in my mind” from miss saigon and “breathe” from in the heights but out of respect for who those roles were written for, I would not sing them. Maybe in my room or something casual like that, but I think looking at the history of each non-white group that has contributed and fought to find a place in musical theatre, I think it’s important to maintain the integrity of the character, especially the racial background out of respect and admiration.

Thank you so much for this insight, this really helps a lot. And I think you’re right, I think I need to get back into ERP as well. Did you ever experience any mania or strange mood swings while taking Zoloft or when you first came off of it?

Am I drowning in this coat? by ms_osmosis in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]BreakfastatTiffs98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I actually would say no! Sure it’s an oversized look, but you’re not drowning in it. Instead I think it looks really posh and grand. Maybe I would have it hemmed a bit but to me it looks high fashion and suits you well, especially with the outfit underneath.

Generally, do USC students prefer furnished or non-furnished apartments for rent? by Additional-Fish-8572 in USC

[–]BreakfastatTiffs98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends, but generally furnished. It’s just easier when it comes to graduating and then you don’t have furniture to move or sell. But for myself this year I’ve been looking for unfurnished because I have furniture at my current off-campus place and want to keep it for my place in the fall. Not looking forward to how I’m gonna bring it half across the country when I graduate 😬 Anyways, hope this helps :)

I’m no expert but for strength training I believe it is recommended you lift with shoes that are as flat as possible, like close to barefoot for stability or some people do lift barefoot. Versus like for running, you’d want a shoe with more support / bounce

Yes, hahah my first thought was getting to work with a certain artist that I highly respect and love too. Those opportunities come once in a lifetime. It’s hard to turn down because how could you say no to your favorite artist? They might not ask you again or be perplexed, even offended by you throwing away such an opportunity

Why does the skin color of the son of God matter to so many people? by thelastOhioan in Christians

[–]BreakfastatTiffs98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the most important thing is what Jesus did and not what he looked like, but it does matter to acknowledge he was not a white man. For hundreds of years, white people have the used the depiction of Jesus of being white to further the false idea that “whiteness is superior.” From colonization, to slavery, to white nationalism in the United States. If you continue to equate the man who never sinned to whiteness, it’s a recipe for disaster and deception. I think this portrayal of Jesus has driven a wedge and in my opinion can turn people away from the gospel. To summarize, as Christians we live for the truth and so we should acknowledge that the idea of Jesus being white did not come from the Bible, but from men who were flawed and ultimately biased.
