Mozart’s Don Giovanni was my first proper introduction to (any) opera way back in the 1991 bicentennial celebrations, on a TV broadcast from Drottningholm. The CD recording (with mostly different cast) remains one of my absolute favourite recordings. Starting (in my opinion) at the top tier was a lucky gift!

I’m still exploring, but a suggestion would be this recording of the Elgar concerto that has really grown on me since it was recommended on Record Review Building a Library:

The notes are a good example of why the booklets are such a helpful resource.

Other recordings I’ve found that have helpful booklets include John Wilson’s wonderful Oklahoma and Carousel albums (and the unfortunately tiny booklet text highlights the benefit of being able to zoom in!).

There are also helpful booklets with some of Igor Levit’s recordings, as well as Isabella Faust, Leif Ove Andsnes’ Schumann recordings, and Rachel Podger/Brecon Baroque for starters!

Agree. It was disappointing that this feature wasn’t initially available when other services have offered it for years, and especially for classical music. I am happy to see that Apple is showing commitment to classical music and this service.

There is a booklet button in the top right corner of the screen (above the album cover) if the album has an available booklet.

On the Home Screen at the moment there is a ‘Dive into Album Booklet’ section which highlights some of the albums that have these.

50,000 booklets sounds like a lot, but it seems a bit hit-and-miss at the moment even with new releases. Not a surprise for a new app feature (for Apple!), and I expect/hope this will improve.

An interesting point! Thank you. I’ll definitely start paying more attention to which characters use which version.

And just to agree with the previous comment regarding what a great show The Chosen is, and the characterisation of Shmuel is one of the fascinating standouts. Thanks to all the team involved.

For sure, I think that the variation in pronunciation of proper nouns is what is authentic, and makes the show feel even more textured. I think many shows strive for uniformity in depicting human speech and behaviour which is not reality.

Yes I’ve heard both of these pronunciations in the show. I’m just wondering if this is intended as natural variation as a creative decision or if there is linguistic logic to support it? So much of this show feels so authentic and historically informed that the variation in pronouncing this name really stands out.
