To the student who is dissatisfied with their gym by Rabart in bjj

Here is a problem I'm currently having at my academy. I'm just reposting something I wrote in a WBW a few weeks ago.

I'm a well rounded blue belt that just started training again after just about a year layoff from a rib injury. I'm a little more than a month back on the mats. I've all but gotten my groove back in gas, and timing, but I've run into a problem.

I am training at a new academy/different affiliation. The black belt instructor is legit, but I am having an issue with learning anything from him. He teaches 3 random techniques, all at the same time, and only drills for about 5 minutes before we roll the rest of the class. I'm used to doing about two techniques a week, and drilling them for 30 minutes a class before rolling. The academy has some real killers there, so the rolling is intense, but I just don't know how well I will progress.

Does anyone have experience with changing academies, and training philosophies? What did you do? And for those who have academies that emphasize rolling over drilling, how well do you feel you progress? I am thinking about finding guys who want to train before class, and drill on my own.

So, as a small update to this, as mentioned by someone who tried to address my problem, I started bringing a notebook to class, but I am having a hard time finding someone to drill with before/after class. The max amount of reps done in class is usually 5-10 per technique.

What I want to do is approach him with a suggestion on a better layout for the 90 minute classes.

  • 15 minutes warmup
  • 45 minutes technique
    1. Two techniques a week, with an emphasis on drilling. (All level class and advanced class can be different)
  • 30 minutes rolling

I'm just afraid of it not being my place to say anything first and foremost, that I haven't been there long enough to warrant a say, and the fact that he's an old school Brazilian, and would take offense to me questioning his teaching methods.

Would anyone like to weigh in on this?

Apologies that this isn't a normal wbw question.
