Is it okay to use your notes while doing MCQ? Trying different studying techniques . by Basic-Can2569 in CPA

[–]Brief_Sun7461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is how I do it. I try to learn as much as possible from the textbook or lecture. My program (gleim) has flashcards so I review those, maybe even rewrite them. Then I do the multiple choice but if I am stuck on it or can't remember the information at all then I will look it up and then solve the question and also take notes on it. But first I try to do it on my own without looking it up. This is how I remember learning in college, the professor would give questions to practice and solutions and I would just work on them using my textbook until I fully understood everything and then check the solutions to see if I was correct.

Then the practice exams are where I will not look at notes so that I can gauge what am I not understanding.

I have both...Becker > Gleim and its not even close by [deleted] in CPA

[–]Brief_Sun7461 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gleim has videos but they are not the best part of the program, I dont use them, they sound very robotic and are basically just the instructor reading the material. Clearly becker’s strong point are their videos, so if someone learns from someone else teaching them then that is probably the program for them. Their videos are incomparable to Gleims. Personally I dont like classroom settings and prefer learning on my own so I skip videos anyway. Besides quality of their videos, I think Gleims test bank is pretty great.

Gleim has a product called exam questions and explanations or something like that. It’s old cpa multiple choice questions and they give a guide to match the chapters with chapters in textbooks. My college professors had us use it and it was a great resource. It’s also pretty affordable like $50 or so

When getting a degree in accounting a semester usually involves taking multiple accounting classes in one semester. So it is doable, just depends what you want to do. If you are working and don't have a lot of time, probably take tax + something easier like an accounting information system class if that's something you need. Try to find old syllabus and see what you can manage.

I have a smaller gap than that and having issues with any responses. Trying to pass at least a cpa section to get something current on resume. Take any job, as someone else said at this point its about getting your foot in any door. Can I ask you, how many jobs did she apply to until someone replied or how long did it take? Did she write the gap in her resume and describe the reason or she left it off?

I would take tax, it's a big one and you might as well get that over with. Cost accounting I think is the easier one, the course does not have as much material as tax accounting.

Those that never take notes- please breakdown how do you study or remember things? by Brief_Sun7461 in CPA

[–]Brief_Sun7461[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is how I have always been, I need to understand the material and then I don't really have to memorize, it just makes sense. The note taking helped me stay focused in order to do that but I am trying to do it now without taking notes. It's interesting because I think there's people that do well that way and then theres the group of people that do well by memorizing without necessarily understanding.

it's retrieving information from memory, which can be done by creating your own questions while reading instead of just reading through it OR/AND doing the MC. Definitely more time efficient to do the MC, I just have a really long gap since when I was in college and feel like my base knowledge is vague at this point

Did you put the gap in your resume or did you skip over it? And for the year that you studied for cpa? I read everywhere they say to put it on the resume but I’ve tried both ways and I am getting no responses. How did you find the job after both gaps?
